About this Unit This position resides in the Department of Human Services within the Division of Food and Energy Assistance (FEAD). The Food Distribution Programs (FDP) unit administers U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrition programs, providing more than $70M in food to alleviate hunger in Colorado. Programs include the National School Lunch Program, Summer Food Service Program, Child and Adult Care Food Programs, Department of Defense Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program, Emergency Food Assistance Program, and Commodity Supplemental Food Program (Everyday Eats in Colorado). FDP also manages mass and disaster feeding programs and various grant programs related to emergency hunger relief and local agriculture. Primary Job Duties Summary of Food Delivery to Customers Loads pallets, equipment, and supplies onto the single‑axle refrigerated truck following written and verbal guidelines and delivery schedules. Unloads food at destinations using a dolly or small electric pallet jack into school and childcare buildings. Completes pre‑drive and post‑trip inspections, logs, and file records according to retention schedules. Monitors the mechanical condition and cleanliness of the equipment, inspecting and maintaining fluid and air pressure levels. Reports truck damage or mechanical problems immediately and schedules maintenance or repairs. Ensures food is kept at proper temperatures and fit for consumption, verifying orders for accuracy and safety. Returns excess food to proper storage areas. Operates electric forklift, pallet jack, manual pallet jack, dollies, and carts as required. Manages purchase card for fuel and maintenance, keeping receipts, disputing charges, and reconciling the card monthly. Maintains cell phone and tablet operational and responds to calls and emails. Provides excellent customer service when delivering products to childcare centers and school districts, acting professionally with all personnel. Summary of Receiving, Picking, and Loading Product in Warehouse Receives, stores, and loads USDA Foods in compliance with State and Federal regulations, policies, and procedures. Monitors and documents temperatures of food products and storage areas, ensuring equipment maintains correct temperature ranges. Receives and inspects food deliveries, verifying the bill of lading for accuracy and confirming it matches the requisition request. Refuses deliveries that are out of compliance and completes follow‑up with USDA. Enters receipts into the USDA’s web‑based inventory system. Maintains safe and efficient inventory storage using first‑in, first‑out methods to prevent spoilage. Picks, packs, and loads outgoing orders in a timely manner, completing all necessary paperwork accurately. Keeps the warehouse clean and reports pest control concerns. Secures the warehouse at the end of each shift to safeguard USDA Foods from theft. Operates electric forklift, pallet jack, manual pallet jack, dollies, and carts as required. Additional Responsibilities Assists with physical inventory at food bank warehouses during school holidays or when assigned to other state work units. Performs other duties as assigned within Food Distribution Programs. Experience Three (3) years of relevant experience in receiving, picking, loading, and driving food products to multiple locations throughout the state. Minimum 6 months of clean driving record; 1 year preferred. Minimum 6 months of forklift, hand truck, and electric/manual pallet jack experience; 1 year preferred. Ability to lift 75 lbs. Education and Experience A combination of related education, a High School Diploma, a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, and/or relevant experience equal to three (3) years. Minimum 6 months of clean driving record; 1 year preferred. Minimum 6 months of forklift, hand truck, and electric/manual pallet jack experience; 1 year preferred. Ability to lift 75 lbs. Preferred Qualifications CDL license. Meticulous attention to detail. Good customer service, strong communication and interpersonal skills. Time‑management, organizational, and problem‑solving skills. Ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Relevant years of state service considered as a preferred qualification. Conditions of Employment Full background checks for direct contact with vulnerable persons: CBI name check, fingerprint check, court database, Medicare fraud database, TRAILS, reference checks, professional license verification, drug screen, PREA, CAPS, etc. Motor vehicle record check. Travel: multi‑day routes across Colorado with paid hotel stays and per diem for meals; driving up to 11 hours per day, 14 hours maximum working time; must drive in all weather and road conditions. State of Colorado residency required at the time of application and throughout employment. Pre‑employment physical/tests; ongoing functional capacity testing.
