Transportation Operator

Employee is responsible for operating motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds up to 26,000 pounds to include passenger shuttle vans (10-20 passenger capacity), cargo vans and 30- to 40- passenger buses. These vehicles may be equipped with air brakes. Vehicles are driven for long and short distances to transport and pick-up articles, supplies, materials, and passengers. Vehicles are sometimes driven through congested areas where drivers must exercise caution when backing to load or unload at docks, ramps, or similar locations. The incumbent assures that cargo is properly located, distributed, and secured, and: that vehicle is not loaded beyond capacity. On occasion may operate special equipment such as manual winches and tie-downs. Responsible for operator maintenance, inspection, and recordkeeping. Major maintenance problems are brought to the supervisor's attention. Incumbent is responsible for other transportation and cargo services related duties such as assisting fleet manager or dispatcher with transportation requests; data collection of vehicle mileage, passenger traffic, and vehicle maintenance scheduling; stocking warehouse shelves and assisting with recordkeeping.
