Engineering Manager

Location: San Jose, CA OR Los Angeles office - 3 days per week on-site (hybrid) What You’ll Do Lead a Highly Technical Team Mentor Staff Engineers, Tech Leads, and Senior Engineers Unblock complex technical problems Drive strong engineering decisions across the team Build and Scale Backend Systems Design and operate distributed backend services Develop scalable data pipelines Ensure highly reliable production systems Create APIs and services powering accounting automation Build AI‑Powered Product Capabilities Develop AI‑driven workflow automation Create intelligent agents operating across accounting processes Integrate LLM reasoning with financial data models Drive AI‑First Development Define how AI changes software design, code generation, debugging, testing, and refactoring Raise the Technical Bar Participate in architecture reviews Engage in system design discussions Conduct major code reviews Provide technical mentorship This is a technical leadership role, not a coordination role. What You’ll Bring You Have Built Real Systems 8+ years of backend engineering experience Experience operating large‑scale SaaS platforms Strong understanding of distributed systems, APIs, and data models Comfortable debugging production systems You Are Still Technical The best engineering managers we hire can still write code if needed and understand the systems their teams build. You should be comfortable reviewing complex pull requests, discussing architecture tradeoffs, and guiding engineers through difficult technical problems. You Understand AI‑Assisted Development We expect engineering leaders to be AI‑native builders. You should have experience using tools such as Claude and Cursor to accelerate development. Experience building the following is a strong plus: AI agents LLM‑powered workflows AI‑assisted developer tooling You Enable Strong Engineers Your success will be measured by how effective your engineers become. You should have experience mentoring tech leads, growing senior engineers, removing technical blockers, and helping teams move faster without sacrificing quality.
