The Phlebotomist II performs advanced phlebotomy and specimen processing duties in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. This role focuses on accurate and compassionate blood and specimen collection, particularly for pediatric and geriatric patients, while ensuring strict adherence to safety, regulatory, and quality standards. The position also supports workflow improvements, troubleshooting, and training within the department.
Responsibilities- Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Collect blood and other specimens, including urine and fecal samples, according to established procedures and test requirements.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and cooperation.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Store specimen samples at the correct temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes to maintain specimen integrity.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy prior to processing or transport.
- Package specimens properly for transport, following all procedures necessary to preserve sample quality.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures in accordance with departmental and regulatory standards.
- Update patient information and documentation accurately in the appropriate systems.
- Read and communicate laboratory results over the telephone to satisfy inquiries in a clear and professional manner.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety and infection control policies.
- Attend and participate in annual departmental training sessions and required continuing education.
- Assist with troubleshooting specimen collection or processing issues and make workflow recommendations to improve efficiency.
- Support training of staff or colleagues in proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques as needed.
- At least 3 years of experience as a phlebotomist in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and capillary puncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Proven ability to draw blood from pediatric and geriatric patients with care and precision.
- Experience pulling samples for a full range of tube colors and corresponding test requirements.
- Strong skills in specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storage according to protocol.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisitions or computer labels to specimen tubes and orders.
- Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety standards.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory protocols.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of specimen handling and documentation.
- Effective verbal communication skills for explaining procedures to patients and answering telephone inquiries.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Phlebotomy certification or formal phlebotomy training.
- Experience in specimen processing, including packaging for transport and maintaining specimen integrity.
- Comfort working with a diverse patient population, including individuals of varying ages and clinical conditions.
- Ability to participate in training and mentoring of colleagues on phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to continuous learning through annual departmental trainings and updates to procedures.
This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment where timely and accurate specimen collection and processing are essential. The position involves frequent interaction with patients of all ages, including pediatric and geriatric populations, and requires a professional, calm, and courteous demeanor. Work is performed around standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, specimen storage units, and computer systems, including use of the Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, safety protocols, and infection control procedures. Staff typically wear appropriate clinical attire and personal protective equipment consistent with laboratory and hospital standards.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
