Job Summary The Graphic Designer collaborates closely with museum staff, university partners, and external vendors. This role involves professional-level work that may be complex or evolving in scope. Decisions are made in alignment with established museum policies and brand guidelines. Department Specific Responsibilities
- Develops and leads the execution of high-quality visual communications across print, environmental, and digital platforms, ensuring alignment with brand standards, timelines, and budgets.
- Collaborates across museum departments, university teams, and external partners to support shared projects, build strong working relationships, and translate stakeholder needs into cohesive design solutions.
- Provides design leadership in cross-functional settings by coordinating feedback, managing expectations, and guiding projects from concept through production in alignment with institutional branding and mission.
- Conceptualizes and produces a wide range of design deliverables, including exhibition identities, gallery graphics, wayfinding systems, publications, campaigns, digital assets, and retail materials.
- Leads design projects through all phases with attention to typography, layout, image quality, and prepress standards.
- Advises and designs for digital initiatives (web, email, social, and emerging platforms) to ensure consistent application of visual standards.
- Oversees production and vendor processes, including scheduling, bidding, proofing, press checks, fabrication, and installation coordination, ensuring quality and cost-efficiency.
- Manages multiple projects simultaneously, establishing timelines, tracking deliverables, coordinating stakeholders, and facilitating communication to ensure efficient, high-quality outcomes.
- Partners with departments to uphold and evolve the museum's visual identity, ensuring consistent and strategic application of brand guidelines.
- Maintains fluency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, and stay current with emerging tools and trends, including developments in AI within the design industry.
- Assists in planning and managing the museums annual graphic design budget, supporting responsible stewardship of resources.
- Identifies basic and complex graphic design projects and performs research, conceptualizes design, sets timeline, and designs visual elements for use in a variety of marketing and communications needs, adhering to IU brand guidelines.
- Regularly consults with marketing and communications staff and other key stakeholders to determine project needs and ensure graphic design elements align with strategy and objectives.
- Designs the layout and format for digital and print graphic design content, including selection of colors, images, fonts, logos, and placement, for various marketing and communications needs, audiences, and platforms; may delegate basic design tasks to Graphic Design Assistant(s).
- Creates images, graphic elements, illustrations, and other visual content using a variety of graphic software, including Adobe Creative Suite and PowerPoint; takes on special and/or urgent projects.
- Seeks input from peers and stakeholders on a variety of graphic design elements to evaluate effectiveness of different aesthetics, colors, fonts, images, etc.
- May provide organizational training on graphic design methodology and strategy.
- May provide guidance to Graphic Design Assistants.
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in graphic design, art, or related field.
Required
- 2 years of experience in relevant field.
- 4 years of professional graphic design experience from concept through final production, including both print and digital work.
