Medical Director Surgeon - Outpatient Surgery

Position Summary

The Medical Director of Outpatient Surgery is a practicing, board-certified surgeon who provides both clinical care and executive leadership within the ambulatory surgery center. This role combines active surgical practice with strategic oversight of clinical quality, physician governance, operational performance, and regulatory compliance.

Working in a dyad leadership model with the Director of Outpatient Surgery, the Medical Director ensures delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered, and cost-effective surgical care while modeling the organization's core values:

Clinical Responsibilities

The Medical Director is expected to serve as a clinical role model and maintain high standards of surgical performance, professionalism, and patient safety. In addition to administrative leadership duties, the Medical Director will:

  • Maintain an active surgical practice within the outpatient surgery center.

  • Provide direct patient care, including pre-operative evaluation, surgical procedures, and post-operative management.

  • Ensure appropriate patient selection and adherence to ambulatory surgery safety criteria.

  • Maintain clinical productivity consistent with agreed-upon benchmarks.

  • Participate in call coverage and peer case review as applicable.

  • Adhere to all medical staff bylaws, credentialing requirements, and continuing medical education standards.

  • Model best practices in documentation, patient communication, and surgical outcomes.

  • Demonstrate compassionate, patient-centered care that builds trust and strengthens community reputation.

  • Maintain board certification and unrestricted licensure.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Governance

  • Lead development and implementation of medical staff policies to ensure quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.

  • Ensure physicians and providers adhere to surgery center guidelines, accreditation standards, and applicable laws.

  • Promote teamwork among physicians, recognizing individual contributions while advancing shared goals.

  • Serve as a liaison to the Medical Executive Committee and executive team on patient care matters.

  • Review unusual incident reports and proactively address operational clinical concerns.

  • Administer policies related to physician medical and administrative practice.

  • Serve as a visible role model for professional excellence and values-based leadership.

Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement

  • Develop, implement, and monitor quality assurance and quality improvement programs in collaboration with leadership and committees.

  • Direct monitoring of:

  • Clinical outcomes

  • Chart audits

  • Utilization and appropriateness of services

  • Patient satisfaction surveys

  • Physician performance and charging patterns

  • Recommend and implement improvements to enhance overall quality of care.

  • Promote adoption of evidence-based best practices.

  • Coordinate review and resolution of complaints related to physicians or clinical care.

  • Review malpractice complaints and claims in partnership with compliance and risk management.

  • Ensure compliance with Department of Health regulations, professional standards, and all local, state, and federal requirements.

  • Lead development of systems to track outcomes, performance indicators, and improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Education & Licensure

  • MD or DO from an accredited institution

  • Board Certification in a surgical specialty

  • Active, unrestricted state medical license

  • Eligible for medical staff privileges

Experience

  • 5-7+ years of clinical surgical practice required

  • Leadership experience in ambulatory surgery center or hospital setting preferred

  • Demonstrated experience in quality improvement and regulatory compliance

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of outpatient surgical operations

  • Knowledge of accreditation standards with CMS

  • Data-driven performance management

  • Financial and operational acumen

  • Effective communicator and collaborative leader

  • Skilled in conflict resolution and change management

Physical Demands

Requires the ability to:

  • Sit and work at a computer for extended periods.

  • Move throughout clinical and administrative areas of the facility.

  • Participate in clinical oversight activities within surgical and patient care environments.
