Summary This position is located in the Specialty Care Services of the Vancouver VA Medical Center in Vancouver, Washington – serving as an Intermediate Care Technician providing administrative and clinical support to staff and patients. Qualifications To qualify for this position applicants must meet specialized experience requirements and other qualifications detailed below. Closing date for applications is 06/18/2026 . All applicants must satisfy the following basic requirement: Proficiency in basic written and spoken English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d). Experience or education that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) necessary to perform the duties of the position. Grade‑specific requirements for GS‑07 (equivalent to GS‑06 in the federal service) are: One year of specialized experience in a role such as patient screening, vital sign monitoring, point‑of‑care testing, wound care, specimen preparation, medication administration, or other direct patient care tasks. Education: completion of at least one full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) or an internship that includes courses directly related to the Intermediate Care Technician role. Accredited institutions only. Transcripts must be submitted with the application. Preferred experience includes: Two years with direct patient care. One year in an outpatient clinical setting. Six months in wound care. Six months in dermatology. Volunteer work with National Service programs or other organizations may count toward the required experience. Duties Major duties include, but are not limited to: Perform observation‑based screening and collect patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel, including completing clinical reminders, obtaining health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identifying health‑related conditions. Complete approved templates and tools such as outpatient intake forms, normal result notes, and follow‑up treatment protocols. Assist in behavioral/psychiatric situations, including crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal patients, and applying prevention and management of disruptive behavior techniques. Use communication techniques such as active listening, restating, and mirroring to complete questionnaires and templates. Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment under supervision. Administer medications via specified routes (intramuscular, oral, topical, eye drops, ear drops, intranasal, rectal suppositories, local anesthetics, nebulized medications, subcutaneous, intradermal) following national and local pharmacy guidelines for disposal. Perform clinical responsibilities, including vital signs, 12‑lead ECG, point‑of‑care blood analysis, and laboratory specimen collection and preparation. Set up equipment and surgical instrumentation for procedures such as skin biopsies, cryotherapy, incision and drainage, Foley catheter insertion. Provide wound care, bandaging, dressing application, and wound measurements. Assist with patient examinations, including gynecological exams and primary care physical exams (heart, eye, ear, nose, throat, gait, skin). Conduct mental‑health care tasks such as crisis intervention, behavioral/mental health screens, interviews, and observation. Prepare and transfer lab specimens to the lab for processing. Use telehealth peripherals when appropriate for patient examinations and screening. Educate patients regarding post‑procedural care, splint care, wound care, and suture removal. Document all actions, interventions, and procedures thoroughly in the electronic health record (EHR) including procedural notes, progress notes, screenings, photo‑documentation, and secure messaging.
