Position Summary Adams State University has an opening for a full‑time Assistant Director of Sports Medicine/Athletic Trainer. The Assistant Director serves as a leader within the Athletics Department, focusing on modernizing and operating the Sports Medicine program. This role balances high‑level organizational management with clinical expertise to enhance the student‑athlete experience while providing athletic training services. Responsibilities Under the guidance of the Director, communicate regularly with coaches and athletics staff regarding scheduling, AT hours, injury reports, travel, coverage, etc. Establish and maintain work schedules, coordinate staff meetings, and prioritize daily and weekly tasks. Supervise interns/GA’s and part‑time athletic trainers – communicating expectations and evaluating performance. Serve as the primary administrator for the DrugFree Sport program, managing scheduling, collection protocols, and educational outreach. Assist in recruiting, hiring, training, and formally evaluating assistant athletic trainers, graduate assistants, and student interns. Provide tactical and operational support for all Athletic Training functions. Oversee and supervise work‑study students – approving hours, scheduling, and ensuring compliance with rules. Log all injuries, treatments, and pertinent information using EMR Teamworks and serve as the point person for medical information software. Handle purchase and inventory of all athletic trainer supplies and equipment. Oversee department‑wide trainings and compliance, including blood‑borne pathogens training, CPR training, and EAPs. Recommend, fit, and apply braces, splints, and assistive devices; assess functional status, interpret results, and determine return‑to‑activity ability. Recognize the role of medications; provide patient education necessary to facilitate recovery. Perform comprehensive examinations of patients with orthopedic injuries or medical conditions. Communicate examination and treatment plans to patients and other health‑care personnel, respecting privacy. Obtain and interpret environmental and patient data to make appropriate safety recommendations. Inspect facilities to ensure they are free of hazards, sanitary, and equipment maintained properly. Educate and train coaches and administrators on the emergency action plan; provide mental health education and assist with ATOD education. Implement emergency injury and illness management strategies following the established emergency action plan. Oversee sport coverage and game coverage; manage injury management of athletes. Maintain strict adherence to athletics department, RMAC, and NCAA regulations. Maintain BOC certification in good standing and pursue continuing education. Qualifications Ability to perform the requirements of the position. Master’s degree in Athletic Training from an accredited institution. Minimum of 2 years of professional athletic training experience, with preference for collegiate‑level program management. Certification and good standing with the National Athletic Trainers’ Board of Certification. Eligibility for licensure or current license in Colorado. Sensitivity and discretion regarding student‑athlete issues. Demonstrated experience in sports medicine administration, including EMR use, inventory management, and scheduling. Advanced proficiency in Google Workspace and specialized sports medicine data platforms. Proven ability to work independently, prioritize, and complete tasks timely. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills tailored to stakeholders. Proven ability to prioritize competing demands, manage high‑volume clinical workflows, and lead complex team assignments with minimal supervision. Mastery of conflict management techniques. Current First Aid/CPR certification. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a diverse environment and commitment to equitable care for a multicultural student‑athlete population. Preferred Qualifications Additional related education and training. Supervisory experience. Experience with advanced manual therapy skills for orthopedics and sports medicine. Knowledge of clinical information/appointment systems. Instructor certification in CPR/First Aid.
