Psychiatric Unit Registered Nurse RN

TriCities Hospital, part of the HCA Virginia Health System, is seeking a compassionate and skilled Psychiatric Unit Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team. In this role, you will provide high-quality, patient-centered psychiatric and behavioral health nursing care to adult and/or adolescent patients in an inpatient setting. Working within our supportive, team-oriented culture that emphasizes compassionate care, teamwork, and clinical excellence, you will conduct comprehensive mental health assessments, develop and implement individualized care plans, and collaborate closely with psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.

The Psychiatric Unit RN will be responsible for administering medications and treatments in accordance with provider orders and evidence-based practices, closely monitoring patient responses, and intervening promptly to ensure patient safety and stabilization. You will perform ongoing mental status and risk assessments, including suicide risk and violence risk, and will actively participate in de-escalation, crisis management, and safety planning. Using trauma-informed care principles, you will support patients through acute psychiatric episodes, help them develop coping skills, and provide education to patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatments, and recovery resources.

This position involves maintaining a therapeutic, structured environment on the unit by implementing and reinforcing unit rules, boundaries, and routines, and by using therapeutic communication to build trust and rapport. You will accurately document assessments, interventions, patient progress, and care plans in the electronic health record while adhering to legal, ethical, and regulatory standards. The Psychiatric Unit RN will also coordinate care transitions, take part in treatment team meetings, and contribute to discharge planning to support safe and effective continuity of care.

You will play a key role in maintaining a safe milieu by monitoring for and responding to behavioral escalations, participating in codes and emergency responses, and following all hospital policies regarding restraints, seclusion, and patient rights. The role requires flexibility to work in a fast-paced, emotionally demanding setting, sound clinical judgment under pressure, and a strong commitment to dignity, respect, and advocacy for patients with mental health conditions.
