Summary ASPCA’s Community Medicine (CM) team provides expert veterinary care to support the welfare of animals and their people through stationary and mobile clinics, serving underserved communities in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. The ASPCA’s CM team brings quality services directly to communities and partially or fully subsidizes basic and preventive care. We treat people and pets with dignity and respect, enabling informed decisions regardless of financial circumstances. What You’ll Do Help animals in need! Our veterinarians, supported by licensed technicians and assistants, provide essential services to pets and rescue animals in high‑volume settings. No worrying about costs to clients, minimal paperwork, no overnight shifts, and no after‑hours emergencies. You focus on your patients and enjoy balance. Compensation and Benefits Starting pay depends on education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands, or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new‑hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum based on performance over time. The expected salary range is $148,000 - $156,000 . For more information on our benefits offerings, visit our website. Work Schedule and Location This is typically an 8‑hour schedule with flexibility to work occasionally beyond the scheduled day. Positions are based at the South Los Angeles Stationary Clinic, the Carson Community Veterinary Clinic, or mobile clinics throughout the Greater Los Angeles Area, with occasional flexibility in reporting location. Responsibilities Medical (60%) Provide compassionate, quality preventive and basic care, overseeing all aspects of veterinary care during a clinic day, including physical examination, diagnostics, treatment recommendations and delivery, prescribing medications, and providing discharge information. Perform pre‑surgery physical examinations on all surgical candidates. Perform 25–40 high‑quality, high‑volume spay/neuter procedures per clinic day at stationary or mobile clinics (training provided by the ASPCA). Diagnose and treat post‑surgical medical complications. Perform and oversee all aspects of minor outpatient surgical procedures. Provide a safe, compassionate environment using low‑stress handling techniques. Triage and refer cases not within CM’s care parameters as appropriate. Perform humane euthanasia in accordance with ASPCA policy and CM protocols. Client Service (30%) Communicate with clients in a professional manner; discuss examinations and test results to facilitate informed decisions. Counsel owners about end‑of‑life and other sensitive medical concerns. Provide discharge instructions and oversee medication dispensing. Administrative/Teamwork (10%) Document exam findings, test results, and treatment recommendations per ASPCA guidelines. Collaborate and foster communication with ASPCA colleagues. Train CM staff, ASPCA staff, and veterinary and technical students through coaching, discussion, and demonstration. Assist in determining the scope of services based on patient and client experience and provide input into protocols. Support research and development to improve animal access across the country by participating in improvement studies. Participate in monthly virtual medical rounds, workshops, or staff meetings as requested. For those willing, occasional travel opportunities to deploy with the ASPCA’s National Field Response team for disaster or cruelty cases. Current California State veterinary license – new graduates welcome. Fear Free® Shelter certification required within 60 days of hire. Ability to use low‑stress handling techniques. Proficiency in physical examinations, outpatient surgeries, and diagnosis/treatment of cats and dogs. Strong clinical judgement and resiliency. Concern for safety and well‑being of self, animals, and others, especially under stress. Ability to stand ≥8 hours and bend, crouch, kneel, and move freely in mobile clinic settings. Willingness to commute to various locations throughout Los Angeles. Work Experience New graduates are welcomed with structured mentorship. Preferred: high‑volume spay/neuter experience. Preferred: general small animal or shelter medicine experience. Language English (Required). Bilingual (Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, etc.) strongly preferred.
