The deadline to submit applications is July 21st, 2026. Please note, the City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-served basis; as soon as we determine a qualified pool of applicants exists, this position may be closed without notice. The Community Service Representative position is designed to provide support resources to the Aurora Police Department and its citizens. This position utilizes trained civilians (career service) responsible for the response and investigation of non-injury and minor-injury accidents to include hit and run accidents, scene processing, evidence collection, determining fault, completing thorough investigations with a logical conclusion and taking in-person or phone reports of non-in progress crimes. The Community Service Representative will also provide static traffic control and direction support for various functions and special events as necessary. This is NOT an ARMED position; however, the ability to de-escalate and mitigate conflict by demonstrating sound judgement and exhibiting high emotional intelligence is absolutely required. The City of Aurora and the Aurora Police Department provide guidance and these requirements and expectations through comprehensive policies and procedures. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Responds and conducts crash investigations. Utilize a Police Radio and Computer Aided Dispatch Program. Issues municipal summons (electronic version or handwritten into summons’ form). Testifies in court. Conducts follow up investigations. Completes in person or phone generated reports of crime. Interviews victims and witnesses. Collects and deposits property and evidence. Utilizes department software and applicable applications for assigned duties and responsibilities. Provides support for traffic control and direction. Performs other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Experience: 1-2 years of in-person customer service involving problem solving and documentation of incidents Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual (fluently read, write, and speak) in any language including English. Strong computer skills and experience with computers and applications on a regular basis. Higher level education. 1-2 years of experience in law enforcement, loss prevention, internal investigations, or security. Knowledge: Safe and proper operation of a motor vehicle. Computer and software application and utilization. Communication and effective de-escalation principals and techniques. Skills: Strong interpersonal and communications skills. Self-motivated and able to work in the field without direct supervision. Skill in the use of windows-based programs. Strong customer service skills. Crisis communications management and de-escalation, public speaking. Skill in checking information for accuracy and completeness and correcting errors. Ability work with others to support a team concept. Ability to take direction for specific tasks. Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively and make sound decisions based on facts and circumstances developed from a thorough and complete investigation. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, all levels of management including executive staff, citizens, and elected officials. Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Able to work non-traditional hours (shift work), and flexibility to adjust hours to the needs of the department. Able to work overtime when required for court, special events, or additional time needed to complete investigations. Licenses and Certifications Required: Valid driver’s license upon hire (driver’s license history/Motor Vehicle Record is required and must be provided). Must obtain NCIC/CCIC clearances within six months of hire. Must successfully complete civilian city of Aurora vehicle operation certification. Training Requirements: A total of 80 hours of classroom/skills training will be provided followed by 80 hours of field training and evaluation. Successful completion of all training and evaluation is required prior to deployment in the field and must be completed within six months of hire. Classroom and Skills Training 40 hours Crash investigations 8 hours Self-defense (Includes OC Spray certification) 8 hours First aid and recognizing drug and alcohol impairment 4 hours De-escalation 12 hours Department procedures, evidence collection. traffic direction and driving 8 hours Mandatory new employee city training Field Training Evaluation Program (FTEP) 80 hours of field training and evaluation. These training standards are subject to change depending on needs and requirements of the Aurora Police Department. WORKING CONDITIONS Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, Community Service Representatives may be required to work as essential personnel. Physical Demands: Light work that involves moving no more than 20 pounds at a time Frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing while conducting traffic investigations or traffic direction. May require frequent pushing, pulling, bending and stooping. Clear vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents. Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens. Hand/eye coordination for operation of vehicle, police radio, and computer keyboards. Reasonably good physical condition for basic self-defense training and application of techniques. Wearing a ballistic vest under the work uniform while in the field and driving. Work Environment: Works primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the four seasons but also occasionally works indoors in climate-controlled office environment. Weekend work can be scheduled as needed and for special events Regular court appearances will be required Equipment Used: Uses city supplied vehicle and standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, and excel. This job is heavily dependent upon effective and efficient use and navigation of Versaterm based software and report writing modules and applications. This position is generally supplied with most tools, uniform items, and equipment necessary to complete daily duties and responsibilities. Uniform: The uniform will consist of a department issued Polo Shirt in a high visibility color, khaki cargo pants, outer coat, and black boots or similar style footwear. The coat and polo shirts will have high visibility lettering and patches reflecting the employee’s position as a Community Service Representative, the employee’s name, and the employer-City of Aurora. Ballistic vest and body worn camera worn during the day and while in contact with citizens The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
