Description:
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for the performance of basic nursing duties.
This includes the execution of physician orders, operation of pill call, and operation of sick call.
Assists the physician in examinations and treatments, and performs technical/clinical procedures within the scope of their license.
Applies appropriate nursing skills in the care and treatment of patients.
Attends sick call with the physician to see patients; prepares a list of patients to be examined.
Prepares the examining room and equipment.
Operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures.
Controls medication, syringes, and other medical supplies or equipment, and inventories as required by established procedures.
Performs emergency procedures as needed.
Keeps equipment and work area clean and utilizes appropriate sanitation methods.
Documents and reports activities in accordance with established policies and procedures including medical file documentation.
Assists supervisor with evaluating the provision of all medical services to prevent the inappropriate use of duplication of those services.
Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
Observes and records patient behavior.
Inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by patients.
Securely stores or safely disposes of supplies and equipment.
Assists with preparing and maintaining a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports, and logs.
Reviews reports and records produced on the shifts and properly processes all reports and documents in a timely manner.
Reads, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, legal and non-legal documents.
Responds to lawsuits via corporate counsel and attends court hearings when necessary.
Conducts research of charts and reviews the status of patients with serious health problems for completion of all necessary intervention and treatment.
Communicates effectively and coherently with administration, staff, patients, visitors, and the general public.
Helps evaluate and recommend physical safety requirements necessary to provide a safe working environment for both patients and staff.
Facilitates, where applicable, accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency and approved, appropriate medical services.
Helps prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports as required and takes appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
Escorts patients or coordinates the movement of patients to and from different areas for medical treatment.
Helps initiate and complete investigations and inquiries with accuracy by gathering information and evidence, interviewing, and obtaining statements.
Exercises independent judgment by determining when probable cause exists to recommend or take disciplinary action.
Engages in functions in confined areas, including working rotating shifts and physically checking the doors, windows, and other areas to verify security.
Maintains awareness that verbal abuse may be present with the hostile views and opinions of patients and others encountered in an antagonistic environment.
