Description: The Laboratory Technologist (MLT or MT) works under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager. Responsible for performing laboratory tests and accurately reporting results to the physician. Aids in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of diseases. Assists in the general operation of the laboratory and quality assurance programs. Maintains laboratory equipment. Exercises independent judgment and utilizes professional education. After completion of probation, the Laboratory Technologist serves as a general supervisor for various testing complexities. Adheres to the Mission and Values of the organization.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs tasks, duties, and complex tests in all laboratory areas assigned.
  • Conducts phlebotomies, including arterial punctures, capillary punctures, and venipunctures as appropriate.
  • Processes specimens utilizing established protocols and technical knowledge.
  • Calibrates, standardizes, and maintains instruments.
  • Performs quality control and preventive maintenance.
  • Prepares and maintains reagent supplies necessary to perform tests.
  • Validates and reports results of tests performed accurately and timely.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of laboratory policy and procedural manuals.
  • Orientation and teaching of students and new employees is part of the responsibilities.
  • Researches and develops new procedures as assigned.
  • Follows established safety practices, including biohazards and exposure control plans.
  • Promotes effective working relationships within the team to facilitate departmental goals.
  • Attends all required in-service education.
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all individuals.
  • Stays informed by attending meetings and reading relevant communications.
  • Maintains reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Performs duties in a safe manner and in compliance with all safety policies.
  • Complies with all relevant policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned relevant to the position.

Exposure Risk: Employee is at risk for exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

Quality Improvement: Maintains current knowledge of the Quality Improvement Program. Collaborates with management to enhance departmental effectiveness. Participates in departmental and organization-wide Quality Improvement activities.
