Lead Environmental Specialist
The primary purpose of the Lead Environmental Specialist is to facilitate implementation of corporate and business-unit level environmental management programs. This individual will administer and improve systems for collection, review and examination of data or information, which may be financial or operational, and process and prepare it for use for purposes of enhancing the management decision-making capabilities of the Environmental Affairs Department, including internal and external performance reporting. This position assists in developing and executing strategy to ensure compliance as well as support energy conservation and CO2 reduction initiatives. The individual will also serve as a technical consultant and liaison to other BSAM Business Units and facilities as assigned.
Responsibilities include developing environmental performance and strategies for sustainability metrics and goal setting, CO2 reduction, corporate remediation, and Environmental Management program implementation. The specialist will monitor pending environmental legislation and assist manufacturing facilities in understanding and complying with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. They will identify, track, and report on key performance indicators relevant to environmental aspects and impacts to drive accountability and performance measurement. Technical support and oversight and improvement of environmental information management systems will also be provided. The specialist will interpret data and provide recommendations to improve energy efficiency, recycling, waste disposal, water use and air pollution control. They will maintain records, prepare reports, and compose correspondence relative to assigned program areas. Facilities and programs will be audited to evaluate operational effectiveness and ensure compliance with environmental regulations and corporate standards. The specialist will broaden and promote energy conservation and pollution prevention programs including site assessments, benchmarking, collaboration, and communication of best practices enterprise-wide. They will assist in strategic planning, procedure development, standardization, and program implementation. Industry benchmarking analyses with regard to environmental aspects, programs, and performance will be performed. The specialist will evaluate and maintain general knowledge of external environmental programs and certifications and make recommendations for application within the company. They will provide indirect supervision and guidance of environmental professionals.
Minimum qualifications include a BS degree in Chemical, Civil, Environmental Engineering or related science with ten years of professional experience in an engineering or scientific field implementing environmental activities to conserve natural resources; working in an environmental management system; or environmental regulatory compliance assurance. Computer literacy and ability to manipulate and develop spreadsheets and help design or improve databases are required. The specialist must be able to perform research work, make mathematical computations and provide comprehensive and innovative recommendations on environmental engineering issues. A pollution prevention mindset with drive for process standardization and continuous improvement is necessary. Knowledge of the principles and practices of environmental engineering is required. Strong organizational agility to enhance cross-functional communication and collaboration is needed. Ability to communicate with all levels of organization is required. Strong ability to self-direct work with broad guidance and input from management is necessary. Ability to travel around 30-50% of the time is required.
Preferred qualifications include previous experience with EPA MACT "Air" regulations. Experience with Intelex or environmental management information systems is preferred. Experience conducting/participating in environmental auditing is preferred. Environmental credentials (e.g., CHMM, PG, PE etc.) are preferred.
