Youth Engagement Specialist - Evening Shift (3P-11P) Schedule: Varies Days Off: Varies PRIMARY FUNCTION: In keeping with the Mission Statement and Principles of Covenant House, the YES is responsible for providing comprehensive, trauma-informed care to youth experiencing homelessness. This position focuses on building positive, trusting relationships with youth, conducting life skills classes, and supporting individualized case plans that support the youth's transition to stability. The Youth Engagement Specialist works closely with other staff members and external partners to ensure youth have access to the services and resources they need, including housing, education, employment, mental health support, and life skills development. This role involves engagement and advocacy in a compassionate and respectful manner. Key Responsibilities: Youth Engagement and Relationship Building: Build trusting, supportive relationships with youth through consistent, respectful, and empathetic interactions. Use trauma-informed care principles to engage youth in a non-judgmental manner, promoting self-esteem and empowerment. Create a welcoming and safe environment for youth, fostering a sense of belonging and stability. Encourage youth participation in shelter activities, support groups, and life skills workshops. Case Management and Support: Conduct comprehensive assessments of youth’s immediate needs, strengths, and goals upon intake and throughout their stay. Support youth’s individualized case plans that address housing, education, employment, mental health, and other personal needs. Advocate for youth to access services, including housing, medical care, educational opportunities, and employment programs. Resource Coordination and Referrals: Assist youth in navigating the system of services, including referrals to community resources such as mental health services, medical care, employment programs, and housing. Coordinate with internal and external partners to ensure that youth have access to the necessary resources and supports. Help youth develop life skills, such as financial literacy, job readiness, and self-care, to promote independence and self-sufficiency. Crisis Intervention and Support: Provide immediate support to youth in crisis situations, using de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed practices. Ensure that youth are safe and their basic needs (e.g., food, shelter, clothing) are being met. Respond to emotional or behavioral challenges in a calm, supportive, and professional manner, while maintaining safety and respect for the youth. Program Participation and Documentation: Participate in group activities, workshops, and recreational programs designed to support youth development and well-being. Complete all necessary documentation related to youth interactions and progress in a timely and accurate manner. Maintain up-to-date progress notes in accordance with agency policies and confidentiality standards. Collaboration and Teamwork: Work closely with other shelter staff, including case managers, housing specialists, and mental health professionals, to ensure coordinated service delivery. Participate in team meetings to discuss youth progress, challenges, and service needs. Advocacy and Empowerment: Empower youth to take an active role in their own growth and decision-making, offering guidance and support as they navigate challenges. Advocate for the needs and rights of youth, ensuring they have access to safe housing, education, and employment opportunities. Support youth in setting and achieving both short- and long-term goals, fostering independence and resilience. Trauma-Informed Care: Ensure that all interactions with youth are conducted with a trauma-informed approach, recognizing the impact of past trauma and creating a safe, respectful environment. Model and promote trauma-sensitive practices in all aspects of youth engagement, ensuring that youth’s emotional, physical, and psychological safety is prioritized. Attend ongoing training in trauma-informed care, youth development, and other relevant areas to enhance service delivery and support youth’s needs. Safety and Policy Adherence: Ensure youth safety and well-being by following shelter policies and protocols, including safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and confidentiality practices. Report any incidents, concerns, or safety issues to the appropriate supervisory staff in a timely manner. Document all security-related incidents, including disruptions, safety concerns, and emergency situations, in a clear and timely manner. Complete detailed reports on security activities, incidents, and interventions, ensuring that information is accurately logged for future reference or review. Follow up on incidents to ensure that appropriate actions are taken and that necessary resources are provided for residents or staff. Emergency Response: Respond swiftly and appropriately to emergency situations, such as medical emergencies, fires, or physical altercations, while maintaining a trauma-sensitive approach. Assist in the execution of emergency evacuation or lockdown protocols as needed. Provide immediate support to staff or residents during crisis situations, ensuring that the safety of all individuals is prioritized and that psychological and emotional support is available. Staff Training & Support: Participate in ongoing training on trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, mental health, and other areas relevant to working with vulnerable youth populations. Engage in regular self-care practices to manage the emotional demands of the role. Participate in ongoing training, workshops, and professional development opportunities to stay informed about best practices in trauma-informed care and human trafficking prevention. Qualifications: Education & Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required; additional certifications in security, trauma-informed care, or conflict resolution are a plus. (Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related field preferred). Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in youth services, case management, or related work, particularly with at‑risk or homeless youth. Experience working with youth who have experienced trauma, homelessness, or mental health challenges is highly desirable. Knowledge of youth development principles and crisis intervention strategies is a plus. Experience with case management software (e.g., HMIS, ETO) and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment. Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and provide culturally competent services. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required. Valid driver’s license and successful completion of background checks. Skills & Abilities: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact with youth, staff, and visitors in a respectful and compassionate manner. Ability to remain calm and composed in high‑pressure or emergency situations. Knowledge of trauma‑informed care practices and a commitment to supporting the emotional well‑being of residents. Strong conflict resolution and de‑escalation skills. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Physical stamina to patrol the premises, stand for long periods, and respond quickly to emergencies when necessary. Physical Requirements: Ability to stand, walk, and patrol shelter grounds for extended periods of time. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and assist in emergency situations as needed. Ability to handle high‑stress situations calmly and effectively. Working Conditions: Full‑time position with shifts that may include evenings, weekends, and overnight hours. Work in both indoor and outdoor environments, including various weather conditions. Exposure to potentially challenging situations involving residents with complex needs, requiring the ability to respond with patience, empathy, and professionalism.
