Polysomnographic Technologist (Sleep Technologist)

Job Summary
The Polysomnographic Technologist performs and monitors diagnostic sleep studies in accordance with established protocols and AASM guidelines . The technologist is responsible for obtaining high-quality sleep study data, ensuring patient safety and comfort, providing patient education, and communicating effectively with physicians and clinical staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review patient charts and verify physician orders before beginning sleep studies.
  • Explain the testing process, setup procedures, and protocols to patients and caregivers.
  • Prepare and set up patients according to facility policies and AASM guidelines .
  • Perform diagnostic polysomnographic studies while closely monitoring patients for clinical and physiological events.
  • Perform titration and split-night studies according to physician orders and established protocols.
  • Recognize changes in a patient's condition and take appropriate action to ensure patient safety.
  • Wake patients when the required data has been obtained and the study is complete.
  • Safely remove electrodes and transducers and assist patients with hygiene needs as necessary.
  • Score sleep studies according to the current AASM scoring guidelines .
  • Complete scoring accurately and within required timelines, prioritizing scoring over non-patient-related duties.
  • Complete monthly Inter-Scorer Reliability assessments.
  • Immediately notify the Medical Director, Physician Assistant, and/or Clinical Manager of adverse patient changes or unusual situations.
  • Assist with the training and orientation of new personnel.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with applicable privacy requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience in Sleep Medicine preferred.

Required Education

  • Associate Degree in Polysomnography from an accredited school.

Required Certifications & Licensure

  • RPSGT – Registered Polysomnographic Technologist
  • BLS Certification from AHA, HSI, or American Red Cross
  • New York State Registered Polysomnographic Technician OR New York State Respiratory Therapist License

Preferred Certification & Licensure

  • New York State Licensed Respiratory Therapist
