The Opportunity

CalcFocus runs production systems for Life & Annuity carriers. Right now, Cloud Engineering is building the infrastructure foundation that makes those systems dependable at scale — and this role is central to that work.

Three things need to be built: infrastructure as code — getting the AWS environment scripted in Terraform, version-controlled in GitHub, and consistently reproducible; performance visibility — monitoring and alerting that catches degradation before clients feel it; and structured deployment practices that are safe, documented, and don’t depend on any one person being available. Once that foundation is in place, the work shifts toward automation and AI tooling.

We’re looking for someone who has engineered AWS, not just operated it — who has stood up Terraform from scratch, scripted and automated environments, and built the repeatability that a growing org depends on. Combined with the breadth to move across Cloud Ops, DevOps, and SRE, that’s the profile. AWS production experience and practical Terraform experience are must-haves. A software engineering background is a strong signal, but not required.

Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure as Code & Deployment

• Partner with the team to stand up the CalcFocus IaC practice — Terraform for infrastructure definition, GitHub for version control
• Get environments scripted, automated, and repeatable — consistent across dev, staging, and production
• Build and improve CI/CD pipelines and AWS deployment processes that are structured and safe in live carrier environments
• Establish deployment standards: what goes out, what it touches, what to watch for

Performance Management & Monitoring

• Understand how CalcFocus systems behave under load in AWS — batch cycles, throughput patterns, capacity limits
• Build monitoring and alerting that surfaces degradation before it becomes a client incident
• Define performance thresholds and lead root cause analysis on recurring issues

Operational Documentation

• Write runbooks and SOPs others can actually execute from — specific, accurate, and actionable
• Ensure nothing in your scope exists only as tribal knowledge

Cross-Track Collaboration

• Partner with Software Engineering and Production Success on production readiness and monitoring
• Work across Cloud Ops, DevOps, and SRE — dig in wherever the work needs you

What We're Looking For

• Someone who has engineered AWS environments — not just operated them — and wants to build infrastructure a growing company can depend on. Five things matter most:
• Hands-on AWS production experience — you’ve designed, operated, and troubleshot production workloads in AWS.
• Infrastructure as code — you’ve stood up Terraform from scratch and know what it takes to make environments scripted, automated, and consistently reproducible. GitHub-based IaC workflows are what we’re building toward.
• Performance ownership — you understand how systems behave under load and build the visibility that makes degradation predictable. You get ahead of it.
• Documentation that others can use — you write runbooks specific enough to follow because knowledge in one person’s head doesn’t scale.
• Cross-track breadth — you move across Cloud Ops, DevOps, and SRE. You dig in wherever the work is.

We'd Be Especially Excited If You Have

• A software engineering background — someone who has written and deployed code understands production decisions at a different level
• Experience standing up or maturing an IaC practice — Terraform modules, state management, remote backends, GitHub-based workflows
• Experience with performance management in production AWS environments — batch processing, throughput analysis, capacity planning
• Hands-on CI/CD pipeline experience in AWS including deployment automation
• Experience in a Life & Annuity, insurance technology, or regulated financial services environment
• Exposure to CalcFocus, iPipeline, or comparable insurance platform technology

How We'll Measure Success

Over the first year:

• An IaC foundation in place — environments scripted in Terraform, version-controlled in GitHub, consistently reproducible
• Performance issues caught before they become client incidents — because the monitoring catches them, not because someone was watching
• AWS deployment processes documented, repeatable, and understood by more than one person
• Runbooks others can execute from without calling you

Compensation & Benefits

This role is posted with a base salary range of $132,000 – $165,000, anchored to the Radford 50th percentile (blended Cloud/DevOps benchmark). Compensation will reflect the candidate’s experience and the scope of the role as discussed during the hiring process.
