Housekeeping Aid Supervisor

Summary This position is located within Environmental Management Services (EMS) of a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. The primary purpose of this position is to exercise technical and administrative supervision over subordinate workers in supporting and performing task (e.g., environment of care, textile distribution and training) associated with the EMS goals and objectives. Responsibilities The Housekeeping Aid (HKA) - Environmental Services (EVS) Technicians who maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families are essential to the patient care experience at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). A VA healthcare career as a HKA-EVS Technician means working alongside other Veterans, who make up 85 percent of the housekeeping staff. Non-routine duties require that the position reorganize work schedules efficiently to ensure work is accomplished in a timely manner. This position is required to coordinate work with supervisors of other services within the positions area of jurisdiction so as not to interrupt patient care or other activities. The position is responsible for the cleaning of all patient areas, corridor spaces throughout Medical Center, Operating Rooms, and all other areas as assigned. Responsible for assuring the efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments of subordinates within established policies and schedules set by higher levels of supervision. Plans daily and weekly assignments, scheduling periodic work for areas of responsibility, taking into consideration the availability of personnel and equipment to meet established priorities. Trains staff and ensures that they are using the patient centered care principles in terms of customer service to patients, patients' family members and personnel. Provides special direction to new employees to prepare them for individual assignments, procedures and safety policies. Schedules regular meetings with staff to make them aware of new procedures or directives. The position keeps the supervisor informed as to the condition of staff, unusual occurrences or matters that should be brought to the attention of their supervisor. Keeps subordinates abreast of proper methods, procedures and uses of equipment and supplies; control the use of supplies and equipment to affect cost control within the unit. Ensures all safety regulations and procedures are observed and may on occasion be required to conduct training classes on specific safety issues. The position approves leave requests for subordinates, counsels' employees, and recommends disciplinary action to a higher-level supervisor whenever non-compliance with policy warrants. The position makes formal appraisal of subordinates works performance and conduct. The position is responsible for the coordination of activities with other services, including rearranging work schedules during remodeling, painting and relocation of offices, clinics or patient wards and other duties which help coordinate moves Work Schedule: All Shifts 1st, 7a.m. - 3:30 p.m., 2nd, 3:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m., 3rd, 11:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. Position Description Title/PD#: Housekeeping Aid Supervisor/PD99911S Physical Requirements: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Dexterity and Safety Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities. HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities. The Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) and Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) provide eligible displaced VA competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
