Urgent Care Medical Assistant

About The Role

As an Urgent Care Medical Assistant in our Medical Assistant department, you will play a key role in supporting providers and ensuring efficient, compassionate care for patients with urgent and acute medical needs. This hourly, full-time position is well-suited for individuals starting their medical career who are eager to learn in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Working closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, and registered nurses, you will help manage patient flow, perform basic clinical tasks, and provide clear, comforting communication to patients and their families. We will provide training and guidance to help you develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in an urgent care setting.

What You'll Do

• Greet and room patients, verify identity, and obtain vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respirations, oxygen saturation).
• Collect and document patient history, chief complaint, and basic health information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
• Prepare exam rooms before each visit, ensuring cleanliness, organization, and adequate stock of supplies.
• Assist providers with basic clinical procedures, such as wound care, splinting support, point-of-care testing, and vaccinations (as permitted by training and certification).
• Perform specimen collection for laboratory tests (e.g., urine, throat swabs, rapid tests) following proper infection control and labeling procedures.
• Perform phlebotomy
• Support diagnostic testing workflows, including performing or assisting with EKGs and point-of-care lab tests as directed.
• Follow standard infection prevention and control practices, including room cleaning and equipment disinfection between patients.
• Update and maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EMR, including test results, treatments performed, and patient education provided.
• Monitor and manage exam room and clinical supply inventory; restock and notify appropriate staff when supplies are low.
• Coordinate patient flow to reduce wait times and support efficient use of provider and room resources.
• Provide clear, compassionate communication and basic education to patients and families about procedures, tests, and follow-up instructions, within scope of role.
• Assist with front-office tasks as needed, such as check-in/check-out, verifying insurance information, and scheduling follow-up appointments.
• Respond calmly and appropriately in urgent or emergent situations, following provider or nurse direction and clinic protocols.
• Support a safe environment by reporting equipment issues, safety concerns, or unusual patient conditions promptly.
• Participate in ongoing training, skills development, and team meetings to maintain competencies and support quality improvement efforts.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent clinical training preferred; on-the-job training may be available for highly motivated candidates.
• Current Medical Assistant certification or registration preferred (e.g., CMA, RMA, CCMA), or willingness to obtain within a specified timeframe if required by state or employer.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to obtain prior to or shortly after hire.
• No prior Medical Assistant experience required; interest in learning and working in an urgent care or fast-paced clinical setting is essential.
• Familiarity with basic medical terminology and vital sign measurement, or willingness to learn through training.
• Comfort using computers and ability to learn electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally and empathetically with patients of all ages, families, and team members.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions, clinic protocols, and safety procedures reliably.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities during busy shifts.
• Ability to stand, walk, and move continuously for extended periods, and to lift or position patients and equipment as needed, within reasonable accommodation.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays based on urgent care clinic hours.
• Fluency in English, with the ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in clinical and patient-facing situations.
