Library Assistant - Part Time

Library Staff Position The purpose of this position is to provide high-quality customer service to library patrons. Responsibilities include organizing and shelving library materials in their proper locations; assisting patrons at public service desks, including Circulation, Reference, Youth, and Computer Lab; and responding to questions, requests, and general inquiries. Additional duties may include processing library materials; helping patrons locate resources; providing basic assistance with computer and technology use; and planning, organizing, and/or implementing services and programs within the library and out in the community. Specific duties and responsibilities include: Providing customer service to library patrons by staffing all public service desks, including greeting and assisting users with requests; directing patrons to appropriate library resources and areas; updating patron accounts; registering new users; checking out, renewing, and processing library materials; assisting with basic computer use; and collecting fines and fees; Assisting with developing, implementing, and conducting a variety of library-related educational programs and activities for adults, teens, and children, including story hour, library tours, and instructional classes in library areas assigned; Maintaining organization of library materials by sorting and shelving items in proper order; inspecting materials for damage; and routing damaged items for repair or further action; Participating in cross-training and collaborating with staff across the library to support daily operations and ensure consistent, high-quality patron service; Participating in staff meetings to discuss and solve problems, contribute ideas for improvement, and keep updated on library plans and activities; Assisting with opening and closing duties; Performing other assigned duties. Qualifications include: High School Graduation or equivalent One (1) year of experience working with the public Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and Valid Driver's License. Supplemental information includes: Knowledge of City policies and procedures; Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for working with the public; Knowledge or ability to learn cataloging standards in an automated library system; Knowledge or ability to learn reference techniques and sources; Knowledge or ability to learn collection development techniques and print and electronic resources; Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; Skill in the operation and use of hardware and peripherals, plus standard office software, which includes databases and presentation programs, along with standard Microsoft products; Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication; Ability to exercise ethical decision-making, good judgment, and discretion in applying and interpreting library and City rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; Ability to provide internal and external positive customer service; Ability to assist patrons and address concerns in a calm, respectful, and positive manner; Ability to work as part of a cohesive team; willingness to assist and support coworkers, contribute ideas, and maintain flexibility; Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes; Ability to present programs and materials to the public, both internally and externally; Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, the public, and elected and appointed officials; Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with City administration, other employees, and the general public; Ability and willingness to adapt to changing organizational needs, conditions, and work responsibilities, including flexibility to try new ideas and methods.
