Registered Nurse -Perioperative Clinic Coordinator

Summary The Perioperative Clinic Coordinator Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing competent evidence-based care to assigned surgical patients. The Perioperative Clinic Coordinator is responsive to patient and provider requests and ensures customer satisfaction, reflecting an understanding of surgical procedures. They are an integral part of the interdisciplinary team to facilitate appropriate patient assessments preoperatively. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency – must be proficient in basic written and spoken English at least to satisfy 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by either the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) at the time the program was completed. Individuals attending a master's-level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's-level nursing degree may become registered with a state licensing board prior to completing the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6) Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing possessing a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration may be appointed as an RN if they have completed an approved school of professional nursing. Credit for foreign nursing education higher than an associate degree/entry level requires formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA, such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Current full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who meet basic education requirements but lack licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120‑day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure, extendable up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis. Grandfathering Provision: All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date are considered to have met all qualification requirements. Grade Determinations: Scope, Education, and Dimension criteria must be met to determine grade and level. The Dimension requirements (Practice – Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research) are detailed for each grade and level in the online assessment. Nurse I – Level I: Delivers fundamental, knowledge‑based care to assigned clients while developing technical competencies. An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing with no additional professional nursing experience required. Nurse I – Level II: Demonstrates integration of biopsychosocial concepts, cognitive skills, and technically competent practice in providing care to clients with basic or complex needs. An ADN or Diploma with one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I – Level I; or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional professional nursing experience. Nurse I – Level III: Demonstrates proficiency in practice based on conscious and deliberate planning and self‑directed goal setting for managing complex client situations. An ADN or Diploma with two years of professional nursing experience including one year equivalent to Nurse I – Level II; or a BSN with one year equivalent experience; or an MSN with no additional professional nursing experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field with a BSN and no additional experience. Nurse II: Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaboration. A BSN with two years of professional nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I – Level III; or an MSN with one year of specialized experience equivalent to Nurse I – Level III; or a related Master’s with a BSN and one year of specialized experience; or a Doctoral degree in Nursing with no professional nursing experience; or a related Doctoral with a BSN and no additional experience. Nurse III: Executes responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to managing complex client care beyond the immediate practice setting. An MSN with two years of specialized nursing experience, including one year equivalent to Nurse II; or a related Master’s with a BSN and two years of specialized experience; or a Doctoral degree in Nursing with one year equivalent to Nurse II; or a related Doctoral with a BSN and one year equivalent to Nurse II. Preferred Experience: BSN preferred. At least 2 years RN experience. GI experience preferred. Experience with chart reviews and medication review. Experience with patient education. Reference: For more information on this qualification standard, please visit Physical Requirements: The position requires a level of physicality normally associated with nursing duties, such as walking, standing, sitting, moderate lifting, repeated bending or kneeling. Examples may include significant amounts of time standing assisting assigned patients and utilization of safe patient handling and mobility protocols. Duties Demonstrate proficiency in practice based on conscious and deliberate planning. Self‑directed goal setting for managing complex client situations. Assess, plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate care based on specific surgical components. Provide comprehensive, professional, and personalized preparation of patients prior to surgical and/or medical procedures, including patients scheduled to receive sedation and anesthesia care. Assume responsibility for coordinating care focused on patient education, self‑management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. Follow procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influence care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Act as patient advocate, answering inquiries and resolving concerns. Collaborate with specialty clinic coordinators, Operating Room staff, anesthesia providers, and adjunct providers to ensure complete preparation for the surgical patient. Maintain metrics related to clinic performance goals and objectives and participate in continuous quality improvement projects. Prioritize caring for the Veteran and demonstrate customer service principles in all aspects of work. Practice within the guidelines of policies, standard operating procedures (SOP), and standards of care relative to the continuity of care for pre‑operative surgical candidates. Validate understanding of the rationale for care processes and decisions. Question clinical practices for the purpose of providing evidence‑based care. Demonstrate the ability to cope with and manage competing priorities while displaying competence in practice and decision‑making, deliberate planning, and critical thinking skills.
