Principal Research Scientist I, Multispecifics Engineering

AbbVie seeks a Principal Research Scientist to lead engineering and production of multispecific biopharmaceutical molecules within the Discovery Biotherapeutics group. The role requires extensive expertise in biologics design, project management, and cross-functional collaboration to advance discovery-stage programs through candidate nomination.

Responsibilities

• Design, engineer, and produce multispecific biologics supporting multiple therapeutic discovery projects
• Serve as subject matter expert on cross-functional teams, providing technical analysis and recommendations across therapeutic areas
• Lead 1–2 projects as Biologics Lead, managing molecule activities, timelines, and decisions through candidate nomination
• Identify and solve technical problems independently; develop innovative research ideas advancing group objectives
• Present original work at internal meetings and scientific conferences; author or co-author peer-reviewed publications and patents

Requirements

• PhD in Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, or related discipline; or MS with 12+ years experience
• 6+ years (PhD) or 12+ years (MS) of multispecific or antibody engineering experience
• Demonstrated expertise in protein design, expression, purification, and characterization of biologics and multispecifics
• In-depth knowledge of multispecific landscape, design trends, and therapeutic applications across immunology, oncology, and neuroscience
• Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects with strong organizational and communication skills
• Experience with CRO coordination, protein expression technologies, and analytical methods like mass spectrometry
• Background in biologic pipeline progression and program management; experience managing direct reports preferred
