Director of Laboratory Services

A hospital in Ottumwa, Iowa is searching for a Director of Laboratory Services to lead and manage all facets of laboratory operations. This on-site leadership role carries responsibility for delivering high-quality diagnostic services, maintaining regulatory compliance, and driving efficient performance across the laboratory department.

The Director provides both strategic and operational guidance to the laboratory team, supporting clinical and administrative functions alike. The focus centers on ensuring accurate, timely, and dependable diagnostic testing while upholding all applicable healthcare standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Direct the daily operations of the laboratory department
• Uphold compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and quality standards
• Manage laboratory staffing, workflow, and overall operational performance
• Create and implement policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives
• Track laboratory metrics and champion process optimization
• Partner with physicians and hospital leadership to support patient care objectives
• Oversee budgets, resource allocation, and operational planning
• Guarantee accuracy, timeliness, and reliability of all diagnostic testing services
• Foster staff development, training, and performance management
• Prepare for and take part in audits and regulatory inspections

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent required
• Degree in Medical Technology or a related scientific discipline preferred
• Hospital or reference laboratory experience required
• Strong critical thinking and sound judgment required
• Ability to operate independently in a high-pressure environment required
• Master's degree in a scientific discipline or MBA preferred
• Previous Director-level laboratory leadership experience preferred
