Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Bethany Home Society (Bethany) provides executive leadership and direction for the organization's financial strategy, sustainability, and growth across its continuum of care, including Skilled Nursing, Terraces, Haven, Independent Living, and In-Home Care. Working in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO), the CFO ensures that Bethany's financial stewardship reflects the organization's mission to serve seniors and their families with excellence, compassion, and dignity. The CFO translates the Board of Directors’ strategic vision into sound financial planning, capital strategy, and risk management, ensuring that Finance Department operations support both daily operations and Bethany's long-term direction. This position reports directly to the CEO.

Bethany is a faith-based nonprofit senior living community rooted in tradition, serving the Ripon area with a commitment to excellence in care and the spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being of residents. The CFO plays a vital role in expressing Bethany's mission through faithful financial stewardship, ensuring that resources entrusted to the organization are managed with integrity, transparency, and care for residents, families, and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following is an overview of the essential duties and responsibilities of the CFO position. The CFO is also expected to perform other duties as assigned by the CEO and the Board of Directors.

Strategic Financial Leadership

• Collaborate closely with the CEO and COO to evaluate and ensure the financial feasibility and sustainability of the organization's strategic initiatives.

• Develop and maintain long-range financial plans aligned with Bethany's strategic plan.

• Advise the CEO and Board of Directors on financial strategy, risk, and opportunity.

• Lead financial modeling and scenario planning for major initiatives, including campus expansion and capital projects.

• Guide capital planning and debt strategy in coordination with the Board's Finance & Insurance Committee.

• Oversee investment activity in accordance with Bethany's Investment Policy Statement.

Financial Planning & Analysis

• Spearhead the preparation of Operational and Capital Budgets.

• Develop financial forecasts and multi-year projections for organizational growth.

• Conduct margin, occupancy, and labor analytics across service lines.

• Prepare Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure daily operations align with strategic goals.

• Prepare high-level financial reports and ratios for the purpose of analyzing operational strengths, weaknesses, and trends.

• Develop and maintain financial analytics and historical data to support informed decision-making.

• Analyze service line profitability and provide recommendations to improve financial performance.

Organizational Leadership

• Serve as a core member of the Executive Leadership Team, alongside the CEO and COO.

• Contribute to organization-wide strategic planning and priority-setting.

• Represent Finance on relevant Board committees, including Finance & Insurance and Building & Grounds.

• Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Human Resources, and Development leadership.

Capital & Treasury Management

• Manage banking relationships and cash forecasting.

• Determine the best investment mix and debt/internal financing structure for capital project expansion and growth.

• Ensure compliance with bond covenants and reporting requirements.

• Lead capital financing strategy and prioritization of capital projects, including tax-exempt bond financing and management of capital campaign deployment against budget priorities.

Risk Management & Compliance

• Maintain a strong internal control environment across the Finance Department.

• Oversee the annual audit process and manage the auditor relationship.

• Lead enterprise risk management efforts in coordination with executive leadership.

• Direct insurance strategy and coverage adequacy.

• Ensure regulatory compliance oversight across all financial functions, including bond compliance reporting, Form 990 filings, and required tax filings.

Revenue Optimization

• Partner with operational leadership on census and occupancy strategy.

• Oversee Medicare, Medicaid, and Medi-Cal reimbursement strategy and compliance, including Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM) and Prospective Payment System (PPS) methodologies.

• Guide rate strategy across service lines.

• Monitor revenue cycle performance, Days Sales Outstanding (DSO), and accounts receivable trends to optimize cash inflow and outflow.

• Oversee Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) contract structuring and deferred revenue recognition.

Department Leadership

• Provide executive leadership and strategic direction for Finance, Accounting, Revenue Cycle, Payroll, Treasury, and Financial Planning & Analysis.

• Directly supervise the Director of Accounting / Controller and ensure effective oversight of Accounts Payable, Billing, and Payroll functions.

• Set department goals, priorities, and professional development plans.

• Build organizational bench strength and succession planning within Finance.

Supervisory Responsibility

The CFO directly supervises the Director of Accounting / Controller, and provides indirect oversight of the Accounts Payable Specialist, Billing Specialist, and contracted Payroll Specialist through the Director of Accounting.

Key Relationships

The CFO reports to the CEO. In addition to supervising the Director of Accounting / Controller, the CFO will collaborate closely with the COO, Director of Human Resources, Chaplaincy, and other departmental leaders. The CFO will also work closely with the Board of Directors, the Finance & Insurance Committee, external auditors, and banking and investment partners.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. • Demonstrated commitment to supporting Bethany's mission and values.

• Minimum 8–10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, including experience at the director level or above, preferably in healthcare or senior living services.

• Strong working knowledge of non-profit fiscal management, including fund accounting, budgeting, planning, project management, and strategic planning.

• Experience presenting to and advising a Board of Directors or Board committees.

• Experience with capital financing, bond compliance, or treasury management preferred.

• CPA certification preferred.

• Must pass all required background checks, as determined in Bethany’s discretion.

• Knowledge of PDPM and PPS reimbursement methodologies.

• Reimbursement expertise across Medicare, Medicaid, and Medi-Cal.

• Experience with CCRC contracts and deferred revenue recognition.

• Familiarity with DSO management and strategies to optimize cash inflow and outflow.

• Experience with tax-exempt bond financing and managing capital campaign deployment against budget priorities.

• Knowledge of Form 990 filings and nonprofit tax compliance.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required. MBA and/or advanced degree preferred. Substantial general accounting and financial leadership experience required, with evidence of increasing levels of responsibility, including supervision.

Performance Evaluation

The CFO will be evaluated by the CEO based on:

• Financial performance and stewardship within approved budgets.

• Effectiveness of financial planning, analysis, and Board reporting.

• Compliance with regulatory, audit, and internal control standards.

• Capital and treasury management outcomes.

• Advancement of Bethany's mission through sound financial leadership.

Mission Alignment

The CFO is expected to conduct all financial decisions and professional relationships with integrity and in a manner consistent with Bethany's mission and values, supporting the organization's commitment to care for residents, families, and staff.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, the Board of Directors, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have advanced knowledge of accounting and financial modeling software, database software, internet software, spreadsheet software, and word processing software.
