Resident Companion

Job Summary:

The Resident Companion provides quality resident safety monitoring services under the direction of a licensed professional. The Resident Companion proactively maintains a safe environment for the resident by providing continuous monitoring and reporting potential unsafe and harmful behaviors. The Resident Companion is also responsible for other duties assigned by the Supervisor, such as engaging in activities, escort to other areas of the care center and companionship during meals.

Job Responsibilities:

• Accompanies resident who is in need of observation

  o   Sits in resident's room with resident, maintaining a safe environment for the resident through 1:1 continuous monitoring that includes remaining within arm’s length and facing the resident at all times, does not include during bathroom and shower activities. Escorts and/or walks with residents who do not require physical assistance. Accompanies resident to medical procedures to maintain continuous monitoring requirements. Offers diversionary/entertaining activities.

• Interacts with staff and assigned resident and family to foster a positive, healing environment

  o   Notifies resident's nurse of any resident requests or changes in behavior or condition and responds appropriately to direction given by healthcare team members. Identifies what safety precautions are in place and complies with all related policies for a resident companion role (i.e. policy, policy). Identifies times when the resident is safely attended by another qualified individual i.e. physician, resident's nurse, family, NCSS staff etc. and is able to step out of the room. Communicates and interacts with resident and family in a therapeutic and respectful manner, with intent to minimize escalation of behaviors. Participates in transfer of care (Resident Companion to Resident Companion; Resident Companion to Nurse; Resident Companion to another team member). Communicates any special consideration, care priorities, and support needs as appropriate.

• Maintains residents’ rights, including the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information.

Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Not required

• Previous experience in a skilled nursing facility, long-term care, or healthcare setting preferred.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

• Ability to provide compassionate, resident-centered companionship.

• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

• Time management and organizational skills.

• Experience using Word, Excel, and electronic medical record (EMR) systems.

• PointClickCare experience preferred.

• English proficiency required (reading, writing, and speaking).
