Data Center Engineer

Role Overview The Skilled Critical Facilities Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems. The role maintains processes that maximize customer uptime cost‑effectively, identifies and repairs problems quickly, ensures contractor quality, and meets internal customer demands. The Technician acts as an informal team leader, fostering a collaborative and innovative culture focused on operational excellence. Key Responsibilities Develops creative approaches to keeping operational costs to a minimum, improving efficiency, and implementing new strategies. Mechanical responsibilities: chilled water systems and components, HVAC systems such as rooftop units, CRAC/CRAH units, and humidification systems. Electrical responsibilities: electrical/critical power distribution from the utility/generator main switchgear through the UPS systems out to the customer load. Fire life safety responsibilities: wet sprinkler systems, pre‑action sprinkler systems, and associated detection devices. Tests performance of electromechanical assemblies and electronic voltmeters. Reads blueprints, schematics, diagrams, or technical orders to determine methods and sequences of processes. Inspects parts for surface defects. Installs electrical or electronic parts and hardware in housings or assemblies, using hand tools. Aligns, fits or assembles component parts, using hand or power tools. Operates, monitors, maintains, and responds to abnormal conditions in facility systems. Areas: mechanical, electrical, fire life safety, and building monitoring and control. Analyses systems to ensure best practices for internal and external customers. Provides feedback to relevant teams on the effectiveness of existing standards and processes. Works with contractors and consultants to review quality assurance for all system expansions, corrections, and upgrades. Tracks and completes an aggressive preventive and predictive maintenance program. Ensures data center operates at maximum efficiency, recommending new technologies and reducing costs. Manages systems to avoid unplanned customer‑impacting events. Determines maintenance requirements for mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Attributes Understanding of the mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems used in a data center environment: Electrical distribution and layout; transformers; PLCs; generators; switchgear; UPS systems; STS; ATS; PDU’s. Chilled water systems; CRAC/CRAH units; pre‑action sprinkler systems. Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and compliance issues and building codes for fire life safety. Industrial safety best practices (lockout/tag‑out, arc‑flash protection, OSHA and state regulations). Data trending, tracking, and analysis; proficiency with PC‑based integrated critical monitoring systems. Ability to process hands and eye requests (tape rotation, rack and stack equipment, inventory, power cycle, patch cable installation/removal). Hands‑on experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial and industrial systems, including: Chilled water systems, large centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, water treatment systems, VFDs and pumps, HVAC equipment, CRAC/CRAH units, humidification systems, water heaters, water/air filters, BMS and PLC controls, emergency standby diesel generators, fuel/oil systems, 480/277 and 208/120 electrical generation and distribution, static UPS systems, double‑interlock pre‑action systems. Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project). Effective communication with customers and internal staff; teamwork. Coordination, supervision, and communication with contractors. Quick learning and issue resolution during normal and after‑hours work. Logical analysis and problem‑solving. Operation of hand and machine tools (hammer, drill, saw, etc.). Operation of electrical tools (multimeter, infrared camera). Operation of forklift. Critical thinking and complex problem‑solving skills. Academic Qualifications and Certifications Relevant high school diploma or equivalent. Relevant advanced qualification or equivalent work‑related experience. CPR/First Aid and NFPA70E certification (obtainable during employment). OSHA approved forklift certification or ability to obtain one after hire. Required Experience Solid experience in a similar role within a data center facilities environment. Solid experience in a mechanical/electrical position within critical facilities (preferably a data center, hospital, semiconductor, or power plant). Demonstrated experience as a critical facilities maintenance team leader. Hands‑on experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial and industrial systems, including: Chilled water systems, large centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, water treatment systems, VFDs and pumps, HVAC equipment, CRAC/CRAH units, humidification systems, water heaters, water/air filters, BMS and PLC controls, emergency standby diesel generators, fuel/oil systems, 480/277 and 208/120 electrical generation and distribution, static UPS systems, double‑interlock pre‑action systems.
