Assistant Research Scientist

Positions with a designated work location in NYC, Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, or Westchester counties shall receive a $4,000 annual downstate adjustment (pro‑rated for part‑time positions). Responsibilities Assistant Research Scientist to work within Advanced Genomic Technologies Cluster core, located within the Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health. Incumbent will perform next generation sequencing operations including: Standard laboratory workflows: nucleic acid extraction, library preparation, quality control, and sequencing instrument operation. Routine maintenance and troubleshooting of sequencing equipment. Assist in metagenomics sequencing for clinical and environmental samples, monitoring sequencing runs, ensuring reliable, high‑quality data under general supervision. Works as part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center’s mission to protect and promote the health of New York state citizens. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology, plus one year of research experience; OR a master’s degree in the same fields (accredited institution). Candidate must meet all federal requirements for staff who perform clinical testing, including the educational requirements. Preferred Qualifications Experience or academic knowledge of molecular biology and microbiology. Hands‑on experience in DNA and RNA extraction and/or library preparation and/or PCR and/or sequencing workflows, and/or quality assessment of biological samples. Experience analyzing, interpreting, and summarizing complex datasets to support research goals and downstream applications. Experience with computational data analysis and instrument control software. Strong written and verbal communication skills and good organizational skills. Conditions of Employment Grant‑funded position, expected to last one year from the date of hire. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables. Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S.; visa sponsorship not available. Travel up to 10% of the time required. Candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location (NY, NJ, CT, VT, or MA) prior to hire. Fully onsite; does not allow telecommuting. Occasional work on weekends, after‑hours, and holidays may be required. Personal protective equipment required. HRI participates in the E‑Verify Program.
