About the Role We're seeking a Fraud & Payments Risk Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of our fraud prevention, payments risk, chargeback, and trust & safety team, reporting to the Head of Risk. This role is responsible for the team's daily performance, workflow, and output — keeping investigations moving, coaching analysts in real time, and making sure the team consistently protects the business from financial loss. As the day-to-day lead for fraud and payments risk operations, you'll work closely with Product, Engineering, Finance, and Operations to improve controls, strengthen processes, and develop solutions that balance growth, customer experience, and risk mitigation. This is a highly cross-functional, people-facing role requiring strong analytical ability, sound judgment, operational excellence, and a deep understanding of payments and fraud prevention — along with the day-to-day management skill to keep a team running smoothly. What You'll Do Team Oversight Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Fraud & Risk analyst team, ensuring consistent coverage and quality across investigations Coach and support analysts in real time, providing guidance on complex investigations, escalations, and risk decisions Manage daily workflow and case assignment, keeping the team focused, on pace, and unblocked Monitor team performance and flag staffing, training, or process needs to the Head of Risk Fraud & Investigations Own and continuously improve the company's fraud prevention strategy across account onboarding, transactions, payments, and platform activity Monitor platform activity, payment behavior, and account activity to identify suspicious trends, emerging threats, and fraud patterns Conduct and oversee complex investigations involving account abuse, payment fraud, policy violations, identity concerns, and financial losses Develop and maintain fraud controls, risk policies, escalation procedures, and investigative frameworks Identify vulnerabilities within existing workflows and implement preventative measures to reduce exposure Review fraud alerts, risk signals, and investigation queues across multiple systems and tools Manage risk across multiple payment rails including credit cards, ACH, BNPL, digital wallets, and payout channels Monitor payment performance metrics including authorization rates, fraud rates, dispute ratios, loss exposure, and reserve requirements Evaluate merchant, creator, and customer risk profiles and make recommendations regarding approvals, restrictions, reserves, or escalations Partner with payment processors, acquiring banks, and third-party providers to optimize payment performance and mitigate risk Develop scalable payment risk strategies that support company growth while maintaining strong financial controls Monitor transaction activity and investigate unusual payment behavior or emerging payment-related risks What We're Looking For 5+ years of experience in Fraud, Payments Risk, Merchant Risk, Trust & Safety, Financial Crime, Chargebacks, Risk Operations, or a related field Experience overseeing the day-to-day work of a team, or mentoring and leading others, with the ability to set priorities and hold people accountable to a high bar Strong understanding of payment ecosystems including card processing, acquiring, ACH, BNPL, chargebacks, disputes, merchant risk, and payment fraud Experience working directly with Product, Engineering, Operations, and Finance teams in a fast-paced environment Proven experience conducting investigations and making risk-based decisions involving financial exposure and platform integrity Experience working with payment processors, acquiring banks, card networks, and fraud prevention vendors Familiarity with fraud prevention and identity verification platforms such as Persona, Alloy, Socure, LexisNexis, Sift, or similar technologies Experience supporting or managing KYC, KYB, account onboarding reviews, and ongoing risk monitoring programs Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data and translate findings into business decisions Experience building scalable operational processes within fintech, payments, marketplaces, SaaS, creator economy, e-commerce, or technology-driven environments Familiarity with SQL, business intelligence tools, reporting platforms, AI-driven solutions, or workflow automation tools is strongly preferred Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders across technical and non-technical teams Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Criminal Justice, Information Systems, Risk Management, or a related field preferred Who You Are You think like an investigator and operate like a business owner You're naturally curious and enjoy uncovering patterns, solving problems, and identifying risks before they become larger issues You understand that effective risk management enables growth rather than slows it down You're highly analytical and make decisions backed by data, logic, and sound judgment You're comfortable operating in fast-paced environments where priorities evolve quickly You take ownership of problems and proactively drive solutions across teams You have strong attention to detail while maintaining the ability to think strategically You're comfortable partnering with executives, engineers, operators, and financial stakeholders alike You enjoy building processes, improving systems, and creating scalable solutions that support long-term growth You lead by example and know how to bring a team along with you day to day, not just carry the work yourself You thrive in environments where you can make a measurable impact on the business every day Workplace Philosophy at Commas Culture eats strategy.
