Maintenance Worker LEAD

Summary This position located in Gulf Islands National Seashore, in the Maintenance Division. Open until 07/20/2026 whichever comes first. Responsibilities The Maintenance Worker Leader serves as a working leader responsible for directing a crew of at least 9 and up to 18 employees in a wide range of custodial, building, grounds, and utility maintenance tasks while performing hands-on work alongside the crew. The position assigns daily tasks, demonstrates proper work methods, ensures materials and equipment are available, and monitors progress to meet deadlines and safety standards. Duties include performing carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, painting, and cement work; troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems in accordance with the National Electrical Code; Obtaining and holding an EPA 608 certificate within a year of appointment; managing potable water and sewer systems; and operating heavy equipment such as, loaders, excavators, and skid steers. The leader ensures compliance with maintenance requirements, responds to operational problems, and upholds safety and housekeeping procedures while contributing to the upkeep and repair of park structures, utilities, and grounds. This position provides support to the entire Gulf Islands National Seashore Florida District. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Selectee will be required to obtain an EPA 608 certificate within 1 year of appointment. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1 year probationary period or 2 year trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or material up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb and working awkward position Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90 + degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind an drain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, biting insects and Poison Ivy, etc. Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, submission of ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA. Performance documentation can be obtained by contacting the supervisors for the positions you served in during your 24 months. If they did not complete performance appraisals ask them to provide a statement of performance for each period of service. The statement must specify the dates for each employment period and your level of performance (dates should match the dates on the SF-50s).
