Benefits Segal AmeriCorps Education Award: $2,817.00 upon successful completion (pre‑tax) Weekly Living Allowance: $775.00 per week, fixed rate (pre‑tax) Relocation Allowance: $450.00 one‑time lump sum (pre‑tax) Student Loan Forbearance: if applicable, administered by MyAmeriCorps. Purpose This Biology Assistant supports the conservation and management of horses, sea turtles, and shorebirds at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Responsibilities include daily horse care, maintenance of pony pens, and assistance with marine debris removal, sea‑turtle and shorebird surveys, and shoreline mapping. Responsibilities and Duties Perform routine natural resource management tasks, primarily for the Ocracoke horse herd (feeding, care, stall, grounds, and fence maintenance). Assist with marine debris identification and removal. Perform cold‑stunned sea‑turtle surveys, migratory shorebird surveys, and shoreline mapping surveys. Collect and organize field data, ensuring quality control. Operate, install, and maintain resource‑management equipment (tools, fencing, trucks). Learn barrier island ecology and geological processes. Deliver daily care and support operations of the pony pens and contribute to long‑term health of horses and facilities. Deliverables Daily care and feeding of the Ocracoke horse herd; maintenance of pony pens; marine debris removal; surveys of sea turtles and shorebirds; shoreline mapping; data entry for the long‑term shoreline monitoring dataset and annual resource reporting. Qualifications U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien. High school diploma or equivalency, or enrollment in secondary school toward a diploma to receive the education award. Completion of National Service Criminal History Check and host‑site security background check. Availability for entire 20‑week term. Preferred Qualifications University‑level coursework in biology, ecology, wildlife management, geology, or related natural‑resource sciences. Comfortable working with horses and ability to perform physical demands (bending, walking, digging, carrying supplies up to 50 lb in soft sand). Ability to work long hours in hot, humid, shade‑less, windy field conditions and live amicably with staff in field housing. Vehicle and Driver’s License Requirements Valid driver’s license to operate a government vehicle. Personal vehicle required. Commitment Full‑time service each week; may include national, state, or local service projects or events. Physical demands may include overnight travel, non‑traditional hours, and varied terrain hiking. Time Requirements Full‑time each week; exact schedule may vary. Lunch breaks and days off not counted toward AmeriCorps hours. Participation in service events may be required. Orientation and Training Project and site training from host site during term. Orientation covering AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities. Free professional development webinars provided by Conservation Legacy staff. Evaluation and Reporting Requirements Evaluation based on minimum hours, satisfactory completion of assignments, and performance criteria communicated at term start. Reporting includes bi‑weekly timesheets, monthly accomplishment tracking, a mid‑term report, and a final report.
