2026 Sleepaway Camp - Kitchen Support / Porter Staff

POSITION SUMMARY

The Kitchen Support/Porter Staff member plays a key role in supporting the health, safety, and smooth operation of camp. This position contributes to daily food service operations, dining hall cleanliness, and overall facility maintenance. The role works under the direction of the Camp Director or designee to ensure sanitary conditions, support kitchen workflows, and maintain shared spaces in alignment with State of Connecticut Youth Camp Regulations, ACA Standards, Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints, and Girl Scouts of Connecticut policies. This position helps foster a welcoming, youth-centered camp environment.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES

Facility & Sanitation Support Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms, shower houses, washstands, lodges, and program areas as assigned. Maintains cleanliness and organization of communal areas, including the kitchen and dining hall. Follows proper chemical safety procedures, including accurate dilution ratios. Reports facility repair needs or safety concerns to the Camp Director promptly. Participates in opening and closing procedures for the camp season. Kitchen & Food Service Support Assists with meal preparation and kitchen organization under the supervision of kitchen leadership. Washes dishes, cookware, utensils, and food service equipment after meals and at the end of each day. Helps maintain kitchen and dining hall sanitation and infection control standards. Supports meal planning and preparation for cookouts, packouts, trail meals, and special events. Assists with inventory, storage, and safe handling of food and supplies. Uses kitchen equipment safely and reports malfunctioning items immediately. Camp Community Responsibilities Moves camper luggage on arrival and departure days. Participates in camp community activities such as flag ceremonies, campfires, and kapers. Participates in scheduled meetings and trainings, including universal precautions and supervision procedures. Reports accidents and completes incident reports as required. Maintains positive, professional relationships with campers, staff, and volunteers. Performs additional duties as assigned to support overall camp operations.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

Must be at least 18 years old. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Ability to walk on uneven terrain and work in varied outdoor conditions. Ability to accurately follow and calculate cleaning chemical dilution ratios. Ability to work effectively as part of a diverse, collaborative team. Experience working with children or in group-living environments preferred. Experience in an institutional or commercial kitchen preferred; willingness to learn required. Strong communication, reliability, and willingness to contribute to a communal camp setting.

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent preferred. ServSafe certification or equivalent is a plus. Current First Aid/CPR certification preferred or willingness to obtain.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
