Survey Instrument Technician

The role involves completing various types of field surveys such as design, geodetic, construction, property, and as‑built surveys, reporting to the Chief of Survey Parties. The ideal candidate has knowledge of survey principles and basic civil engineering principles related to construction processes. Illustrative Duties Operate surveying instruments including GPS & RTK equipment and electronic data stations to collect data for pre‑engineering design surveys, establish and re‑establish lines for construction stakeout surveys, and record easement and property lines. Recover property corners and set traverse control points for boundary surveys. Set and mark stakes for construction stakeout projects. Direct the survey party in the absence of the party chief and when acting for the Survey Crew Chief. Maintain survey equipment and survey vehicle, ensuring the vehicle is stocked with supplies. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of principles and practices of survey field work. Working knowledge of mathematics, engineering formulas and techniques, including trigonometric functions and curve computations. Understanding of applicable County, State, and Federal laws, codes, and regulations. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Proficiency with AutoCAD and the GIS system. Ability to properly use and adjust survey equipment. Ability to conduct research and evaluate data. Ability to interpret legal descriptions, engineering plans, maps, and field data. Ability to apply basic surveying principles to problem solving. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation or GED plus two years of survey field work. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Valid motor vehicle operator’s license. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer. Graduation from a five‑year Surveying Apprenticeship Classroom Education Program. Three or more years of experience with current field equipment (Trimble total stations, scanners, data collectors, Trimble GPS) within the last five years. Three or more years of experience collecting and recording field data, coding data for accurate mapping, and interpreting data for design and construction surveys. Knowledge of mathematics and techniques, including trigonometric functions and curve computation. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to endure variable and extreme weather, handle snakes, insects, and poisonous plants, lift and carry 75 pounds over uneven natural terrain, perform physical labor and positioning of equipment, drive stakes and marking material, use tools such as mallets, sledgehammers, machetes, bush‑hooks, and shovels, maneuver in wooded areas and construction sites, read and write proficiently, use computer software for communication and documentation, and maintain hearing acuity for safety in noisy environments.
