Interim Chief Financial Officer

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead the financial operations of a large nonprofit Community Action Agency managing approximately 50 federal, state, and private grant programs. The CFO will serve as a key member, partnering with the CEO, Board of Directors, and senior management to ensure fiscal sustainability, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence. This role requires deep nonprofit accounting and grant management experience, strong cash management expertise, and familiarity working with Connecticut state agencies and federally funded programs, including AmeriCorps.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic financial leadership for a multi-entity nonprofit organization, overseeing accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, treasury, risk management, and internal controls.
• Develop and maintain a 13-week rolling cash flow forecast , providing regular updates and analysis to executive leadership and the Office of Policy and Management (OPM) as required.
• Oversee the financial administration and compliance of federal, state, and private grants , ensuring proper reporting, cost allocation, and adherence to funding requirements.
• Serve as the fiscal lead for AmeriCorps programs and other government-funded initiatives.
• Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process across multiple programs and funding sources.
• Present monthly financial statements, cash flow analyses, budget performance reports, and strategic recommendations to the Board of Directors , attending board and finance committee meetings approximately twice per month.
• Manage organizational cash flow, banking relationships, investments, debt obligations, and financial planning activities.
• Direct annual audits, Single Audits, tax filings, and compliance reporting requirements.
• Ensure strong internal controls, financial policies, and procedures that support organizational growth and accountability.
• Supervise, mentor, and develop the finance team while fostering a culture of collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement.
• Partner with operational leaders to evaluate program performance, maximize reimbursement opportunities, and support strategic decision-making.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master's degree preferred.
• CPA designation strongly preferred.
• Minimum 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, including senior-level nonprofit finance experience.
• Demonstrated experience managing federal and state grants , grant compliance, and cost allocation methodologies.
• Experience working with Connecticut state agencies and funding sources preferred.
• Proven expertise in cash management, treasury operations, and rolling cash flow forecasting.
• Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards, Uniform Guidance, Single Audits, and board reporting.
• Experience presenting financial information to executive leadership, finance committees, and Boards of Directors.
• Exceptional leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
