Job Title Senior Manager: Operations Transportation Job Summary Assists in the day‑to‑day management of transportation operations and manages the professional and timely flow of communications between Transportation Specialists, office support staff, parents, schools, and contractors. Serves as the principal operational assistant and advisor to the Supervisor of Transportation. Additional Work Days/Hours Flexibility with schedules, emergencies, evenings/nights, extended hours, inclement weather, on‑call duties, and summer hours. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Supervise daily operational issues for Transportation Specialists, Support Specialists, Routers, Training Center, and office staff. Develop and implement processes for timely communications using current technologies. Ensure walk route surveys and walk zone maps are complete and up to date. Prepare reports, board exhibits, and other documents; investigate operational issues; collect and analyze data; support recruitment efforts. Respond to inquiries from the Board of Education, administrators, school districts, state officials, and county offices. Track Board agenda items and stay informed on key policies and directives. Serve on committees, edit reports, and maintain schedules for the Supervisor of Transportation’s sponsored committees. Train, conduct observations, and perform performance appraisals for Specialists and Support Specialists. Represent the school system in the Supervisor’s absence at governmental, civic, and professional meetings. Utilize AACPS computer systems to analyze financial, operational, and project data. Perform other related duties assigned within the same or lower classification. Minimum Qualifications Education Bachelor’s Degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills. Experience Seven (7) years in school transportation, safety, training, scheduling, and routing. Five (5) years of management experience. Three (3) years with budgeting, finance, purchasing, planning, operations, or logistics support preferred. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of school system organization and department operations. Strong organizational, analytical, and planning skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Knowledge of federal and state regulations and board policies. Awareness of current trends and research in the field. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. Proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite). Licenses & Certifications Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with P and S endorsements (Maryland) required. Driver’s License (DL) Class C, Non‑Commercial, issued by Maryland or state of legal residence required. Daily access to reliable transportation. Driving Requirements Driving required to conduct bona fide board business within the scope of the position. Personal vehicle preferred. Leadership Role Second‑level supervisor. People Management Manages 6–20 direct staff. Manages 11–49 indirect staff. Manages 1–2 departments. Management Duties & Responsibilities Interview, select, and train employees. Direct employee work and maintain supervision records. Assess employee performance and recommend promotions or status changes. Handle employee complaints and grievances. Discipline employees as necessary. Plan work and determine techniques to use. Allocate tasks among employees. Ensure employee and property safety and security. Monitor and enforce legal compliance.
