Description Program Director Interventional Radiology Residency Programs (IR-Integrated and IR-Independent) Emory University School of Medicine Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences invites applications and nominations for the position of Program Director for its Interventional Radiology Residency Programs — encompassing both the IR-Integrated and IR-Independent training pathways. This is a rare opportunity to lead one of the largest, most clinically rich, and most innovative IR training programs in the United States at a critical and exciting moment in its evolution. The program encompasses 31 residents across IR-Integrated and IR-Independent pathways — training across 7 distinct clinical sites in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area with a wide clinical scope and breadth and culture of innovation. In addition to on‑service training, residents and fellows receive more than 150 didactic lectures per year, cross‑departmental lectures and multidisciplinary tumor boards (liver, portal hypertension, NET), are part of the Atlanta Interventional Radiology Society (AIRS) 2–3x/year and numerous international IR education partnerships, including Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Israel, Egypt, South Africa, Georgia, Armenia, Peru, and others. What’s more, the program members have access to all Radiology department tracks as well as Emory GME‑wide tracks, including a Research Track with protected academic time, dedicated research course, and a capstone project, the Clinical Education Track (CET) with longitudinal educator training, practicum, and capstone, the Global Health Track imparting cultural humility, interdisciplinary teams, and global projects, an Integrated Imaging Informatics Track (I3T), a Quality Improvement & Innovation Track, Molecular Imaging in Medicine Track, Business, Leadership, and Advocacy in Radiology (BLAiR) Track, Emory GME‑wide Medical Innovation Track, and the Adopt a Resident Grant. Emory IR is a sought‑after destination for medical student rotations year‑round, with peak volume in summer months. The program serves as a meaningful entry point into the specialty pipeline nationally. The incoming Program Director will inherit a program with deep infrastructure, strong institutional support, a strong partnership with the Georgia Institute of Technology, dedicated associate and assistant program directors, and a culture of excellence built over many years. The Program Director holds overall responsibility for the accreditation, administration, curriculum, assessment, and culture of both the IR-Integrated and IR-Independent residency programs. This is a dual‑program leadership role with a fully staffed education team and a strong institutional foundation. The role carries protected administrative time supported by the School of Medicine, and a leadership team committed to a successful transition. Program Administration and Accreditation Maintain full ACGME accreditation for both programs; manage annual ADS submissions, block schedules, and citation/AFI responses Oversee Emory GME reporting requirements and serve as the institutional interface for both programs Ensure program compliance with ACGME Common Program Requirements and IR‑specific program requirements Manage complement, quota, and FTE negotiations with participating hospitals Recruitment Lead annual recruitment cycles for IR-Integrated (~60–80 applicants interviewed for 5 spots) and IR-Independent programs Conduct Zoom interviews across 4–5 interview days per cycle; coordinate faculty and senior resident interview panels Develop and update annual pre‑interview program presentations sent to invited applicants Build and finalize rank lists in consultation with the faculty interview team Lead recruitment for the ABR IR Alternate Pathway (international applicants; separate application process) Resident Assessment and Development Chair or oversee the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC); conduct semi‑annual milestone reviews for all residents Lead the program’s ongoing transition to competency‑based medical education (CBME) and further development of the EPA system Meet regularly with residents to support academic progress, address concerns, and provide mentorship Oversee job placement support for graduating trainees Curriculum and Program Development Oversee the weekly IR lecture series and annual didactic calendar (>150 lectures/year) Lead the annual Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) meeting and "State of Education" address Drive program innovation: new clinical rotations, track development, assessment tools, and educational initiatives Supervise and mentor associate and assistant program directors; support faculty development in education Operations and Coordination Weekly meetings with the program coordinator to manage the full administrative calendar Process ongoing verification requests for current and former trainees Participate in the quarterly Emory GME Program Director Series Maintain active engagement with APDIR and AAR Minimum Qualifications MD or DO with board certification in Interventional Radiology (or eligibility) ACGME‑accredited IR training; eligibility for faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level or above Demonstrated commitment to graduate medical education and resident training Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills Familiarity with ACGME accreditation requirements and the graduate medical education regulatory landscape Applicants must be ABR board‑certified/eligible and be eligible to obtain an unrestricted Georgia medical license.
