Lactation Specialist

This position provides support for the caregiver infant breastfeeding/chest feeding dyad. Works collaboratively with the nursing team to make clinical assessments to address patient’s feeding needs and goals.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assesses patients’ lactation needs by obtaining medical histories, examining patients, and gathering information about the baby and family setting. Analyzes and documents physical, psychological, and social factors in developing an individualized plan of care. Communicates the plan of care and all pertinent information to other members of the health care team to provide coordinated patient treatment. Keeps accurate medical records and updates nursing care whenever conditions, needs, or goals of the patient change. Provides guidance to caregiver on proper positions and latch techniques to minimize potential complications. Assists with positioning and latch, hand expression, alternative feeding methods such as cup, syringe and SNS. Teaches lactation instruction to other healthcare professionals and monitors the proper performance of their training to patients. Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of practice, guidelines, policies, procedures, and protocols within area of lactation. Manages, organizes and prioritizes competing responsibilities simultaneously and independently. Maintains strict confidentiality in alignment with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) guidelines and InterMed policies. Perform other duties to support the mission, vision and values of InterMed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required Experience: 3+ years of clinical experience in maternal/child nursing required. Proficient in Windows applications, electronic medical records preferred. Excellent professional judgement and decision-making ability. Excellent communication and critical thinking skills.
