Position: Substance Use Counselor I – Corrections Location: Columbia Correctional Institution and Annex, 216 S.E. Corrections Way, Lake City, FL 32025‑2013 Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM Responsibilities Conduct client interviews to review substance use disorder and treatment history. Evaluate client response to treatment, recommend modifications, and develop individualized treatment plans and goals. Provide basic didactic group counseling, including psychoeducation, drug education, and family education. Offer individual counseling and educational programs on relapse prevention, problem solving, behavior modification, anger management, etc. Under direct supervision, carry caseload per State and contract requirements. Collaborate with clients to develop discharge summaries and after‑care plans. Coordinate required services to resolve emergencies and continue recovery support. Collect and maintain treatment records and reports to ensure compliance with organizational, regulatory, accreditation, and contractual requirements. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a helping profession from an accredited college or university. Some previous experience in substance use treatment/counseling and/or mental health counseling is preferred. Preferred certifications: CAP, MCAP, LMHC, LCSW, or LMFT. Must be able to obtain Florida Department of Corrections clearance to work in the correctional institution. Basic knowledge of human growth, psychosocial development, group and individual dynamics, conflict resolution, and intervention techniques. Basic understanding of mental health disorders requiring referrals. Basic communication skills and active listening, social perceptiveness, and ability to read and interpret policies. Ability to understand side effects and impact of medications on clients. Adaptability and flexibility. Physical Requirements Walk and move about the facilities for up to two hours at a time to monitor and interact with clients. Occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, or pull objects. Record, proofread, and check documents for accuracy; prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribe and read. Use a keyboard and video display terminal to receive, retrieve, and audit information and data. Respond to telephones and detect alarms and unusual noises.
