Responsibilities The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients’ medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes or contributes to a care plan, including activities such as administering medication, managing IV lines, administering therapies, observing the patient, consulting with physicians and other clinicians, and teaching patients and families how to manage illnesses or injuries. The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides, delegating when appropriate, and supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills. The RN precepts new hire staff and students, assisting them to complete required competency tasks, and continues to enhance their knowledge in nursing management and patient care as required. ESA? The RN may continue to improve the patients' outcomes through evidence‑based practice. Essential Functions Collect health data systematically, prioritizing based on patient condition, and involve the family in analysis and decisions. Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient’s health problems and develop family‑centered, culturally relevant plans of care. Implement interventions, initiate treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures, and provide comprehensive nursing care to meet physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs. Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes, document observations and interventions, and continually assess the quality and effectiveness of the care plan. Evaluate nursing practice against professional standards and maintain current knowledge of regulations and policies. Integrate ethical principles and enhance knowledge of cultural and diversity needs. Collaborate with peers and other health care providers through positive role‑modeling, preceptor/mentor programs, and professional development initiatives. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care delivery. Develop and evaluate evidence‑based standards of care, initiate and adapt changes in practice, and support research integration. Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost when planning and delivering patient care, utilizing resources effectively and efficiently. Education Other / Certificate: All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire OR have 5 or more years of RN experience (direct or indirect) at the time of hire. Required Associate or Diploma in Nursing: All staff with direct responsibility for stroke patients refer to the addendum for stroke‑specific education requirements—prior to start. Required Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN) – Preferred Experience Other >10 months in a med‑surg or acute specialty setting. Required 1 year RN experience for all float positions. Required License and Certifications Basic Life Support (BLS) – Certification required upon hire, including unit‑specific certification as required. Required Registered Nurse (RN) – State or compact state licensure in Alabama required upon hire.
