Gas Measurement Technician I

This is the first of two levels in the Gas Measurement Technician series. Incumbents perform skilled work in the testing, repair, and operations of the Gas Distribution system. Responsibilities may include inspecting, installing, and repairing gas meters and regulators; responding to customer complaints; creating and/or completing various work orders utilizing Enquesta and/or Servicelink software; checking odorant levels; maintaining a supply of tools and equipment; programming meter reading devices testing and site maintenance; enforcing safety rules and federal regulations; maintaining records of work performed and equipment tested.

Gas Measurement Technician II

This is the second of two levels in the Gas Measurement Technician series. Incumbents perform skilled work in the testing, repair, and operation of the Gas Distribution system. Responsibilities may include inspecting, installing, testing, and repairing gas meters and regulators; responding to customer complaints; creating and/or completing various work orders utilizing Enquesta and/or Servicelink software; checking odorant levels; programming meter reading devices testing and site maintenance; enforcing safety rules and federal regulations; and maintaining records of work performed and equipment tested.

Example Of Duties

Essential Functions - Gas Measurement Technician I:

  • Install, adjust, test, and repair natural gas residential regulators and meters which may include inspecting, replacing, and removing equipment and materials; operating systems as required; and performing related duties utilizing specialized technology.
  • Receives and responds to work orders of operational issues and deals with the public to handle customer concerns and complaints.
  • Tests new and retired meters to collect data for accuracy and when determined, may calibrate, assemble, and paint to reintroduce into the gas distribution system. Testing regulators with a manometer to ensure proper operating pressures and building meter setups for future installations.
  • Prepares, reviews, and maintains a variety of operational records and reports.
  • Maintains inventory of parts and equipment in area of responsibility.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Essential Functions - Gas Measurement Technician II:

  • Install, adjust, test, and repair natural gas residential regulators and meters which may include inspecting, replacing, and removing equipment and materials; operating systems as required; and performing related duties utilizing specialized technology.
  • Receives and responds to work orders of operational issues and deals with the public to handle customer concerns and complaints.
  • Responsible for the completion of the department's annual gas meter change-out program.
  • Tests new and retired meters to collect data for accuracy and when determined, may calibrate, assemble, and paint to reintroduce into the gas distribution system. Testing regulators with a manometer to ensure proper operating pressures and building meter setups for future installations.
  • Prepares, reviews, and maintains a variety of operational records and reports.
  • Maintains inventory of parts and equipment in area of responsibility.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Education and Training:

  • Gas Measurement Technician I Education and Experience:
    • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
    • One (1) year of utility maintenance and construction experience.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job's essential duties.
    Licensing and Certifications Requirements
    • Possession of a valid Class D Driver's License.
    • Position requires various Natural Gas Operator Qualifications deemed pertinent to the position.
  • Gas Measurement Technician II
    • Education and Experience:
      • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
      • Two (2) years of experience as a Gas Measurement Technician I.
      • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job's essential duties.
      Licensing and Certifications Requirements
      • Possession of a valid Class D driver's license.
      • Position requires various Natural Gas Operator Qualifications deemed pertinent to the position.

    Supplemental Information

    Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required:

    Gas Measurement Technician I - II Knowledge of:

    • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
    • Natural gas and other various safety principles and practices.
    • City geography.
    • Record keeping principles.
    • Computers and related software applications.

    Skill in:

    • Utilizing and maintaining applicable tools, equipment, and vehicles.
    • Reading and applying reports, procedures, policies, and manuals.
    • Providing customer service.
    • Mechanical aptitude.
    • Prioritizing work.
    • Applying applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
    • Using a computer and related software applications.
    • Preparing operational reports and records.
    • Monitoring and maintaining inventory.
    • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisors, the public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.

    Physical Requirements:

    Gas Measurement Technician I - II The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

    • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
    • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
    • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
    • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
    • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
    • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination sound.
    • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
    • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. It occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
    • Mental Acuity: Making rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
    • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
    • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
    • Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
    • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
    • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. It occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
    • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
    • Visual ability 1: sufficient to perform an activity like preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
    • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or move from one work site to another.
