Summary The Supervisory Social Worker (GS-13) provides leadership, oversight, and direction for social work operations within Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC), including Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC), the Medical Foster Home Program, the Geriatric Patient Aligned Care Team (GeriPACT), and the Community Living Center (CLC). Learn more about this agency Duties Help Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The Supervisory Social Worker (GS-13) provides leadership, oversight, and direction for social work operations within Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC), including Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC), the Medical Foster Home Program, the Geriatric Patient Aligned Care Team (GeriPACT), and the Community Living Center (CLC).
- Develops, evaluates, and maintains standard operating procedures to ensure consistent, high-quality program delivery.
- Monitors program performance measures, identifies trends, and implements improvements to strengthen Veteran outcomes and meet or exceed SAIL and hospital benchmarks.
- Leads and participates in interdisciplinary quality improvement efforts related to care coordination, transitions of care, and length-of-stay reduction.
- Serves on key facility committees such as Utilization Management, Acute Care, and the Complex Discharge Team, representing Social Work Service interests.
- Provides training, consultation, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for staff across multiple grade levels and disciplines.
- Ensures timely completion of administrative requirements, including suspense actions, reports, workload tracking, and documentation standards.

- Collaborates with Nursing, Geriatrics & Extended Care leadership, and other departments to resolve
- Provides direct clinical services to Veterans and maintains an active clinical caseload as designated by Social Work leadership.

- Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
- Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to
- Loss of Licensure or Certification: Once licensed or certified, social workers must maintain a full, valid, and unrestricted independent license or certification to remain qualified for employment. Loss of licensure or certification will result in removal from the GS-0185 social worker series and may result in termination of employment.
- English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
- Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines.
- Skill in a range of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation with other departments and quality improvement.
- Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services by supervised social workers.
- Ability to delegate authority, manage priorities, coordinate work, and follow up on pending issues to complete duties in an accurate and timely fashion.
- Ability to analyze organizational and operational problems, develop and implement solutions that result in efficient operations, and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity within the service.
- Ability to provide staff training and development
- Extensive clinical experience serving medically complex older adults, including work in Geriatrics & Extended Care settings such as Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC), GeriPACT, Medical Foster Home, or Community Living Center (CLC)
- Experience Supporting or leading complex discharge planning, risk mitigation, or safety related case discussions involving high risk Veterans.
- Experience managing or coordinating across multiple physical locations or within large, complex healthcare systems.
- Experience providing training, mentorship, or consultation to staff of varying skill levels and disciplines.
- Proficiency in balancing clinical and administrative responsibilities while maintaining timely workload completion and adherence to performance expectations.
