Academic Advisor - College of Engineering and Science-1
Florida Institute of Technology
Academic Advisor
Florida Tech is seeking a dedicated and student-centric Academic Advisor to join our Office of Student Advising. In this role, you will serve as a primary guide for undergraduate students majoring within the College of Engineering and Sciences—from their first day on campus to graduation. You will empower students to make informed educational decisions, navigate university policies, and develop comprehensive academic plans that align with their personal and career aspirations. As an Academic Advisor, you aren't just a course scheduler; you are a collaborator, a problem-solver, and a champion for student success. You will work closely with academic units, faculty, and support offices to ensure every student has a clear, accurate pathway to completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide personalized, one-on-one advising to undergraduate first-time-in-college (FTIC), returning, and transfer students.
- Guide students through course registration in alignment with their major's degree plan and the nuances of academic core and departmental requirements.
- Assist students in identifying long-term goals and career plans, ensuring their academic path supports their future professional life.
- Utilize advising technology and degree audit software to monitor student progress and maintain precise records.
- Collaborate with the Registrar's office and academic departments to resolve registration issues and verify graduation eligibility.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all student records in compliance with FERPA regulations.
- Act as a vital liaison between the Office of Student Advising and various colleges/departments to stay updated on curriculum changes and departmental policies.
- Serve as a point of contact for parents and guardians within the scope of FERPA.
- Participate in New Student Orientation, including the delivery of content and post-event evaluation.
- Connect students with essential campus resources, including academic support, accessibility resources, and wellness services.
- Promote student engagement by encouraging participation in civic opportunities, student organizations, undergraduate research, internships, and honor societies.
- Act as a Campus Security Authority for Clery Act reporting to ensure a safe campus environment.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree required (Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field preferred).
Experience: Prior experience in academic advising, student affairs, or a related educational setting is highly valued.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to relate to a diverse student population.
- Proficiency in advising technology and data management systems.
- A deep commitment to student success and the ability to "cheer students on" through their academic journey.
- Knowledge of university policy and procedures is a plus.

The numbers provided include crime statistics that were reported to local law enforcement agencies, campus security and other Campus Security Authorities.
The report also includes institutional policy statements regarding campus safety and security measures; descriptions of prevention and awareness programs; related university procedures and important guidance; and other essential safety information.
You can obtain a printed copy of this report at the Department of Security Welcome Center located at 3126 Panther Place, during normal business hours, or by accessing the following website 2025 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.
