School NurseThe Lansing School District serves over 10,000 PreK-12 students across 25 school buildings in the increasingly diverse urban community of Lansing, MI. All of Lansing School District's team members are dedicated to our mission to provide an excellent education to all students in a safe and nurturing environment.In Pursuit of this mission, we are looking to hire a School Nurse.The school nurse may be assigned to any pre-K through 12th grade school within the Lansing School District. The school nurse provides professional nursing service to a variety of general education and special education students. School Nurses provide routine health care, case management, and emergency care within the school setting. The nurse will develop emergency care plans for students with acute and chronic health conditions, develop medical care plans for students with chronic health conditions, and assist students and families with access to school and community resources to improve health and remove barriers to school attendance and performance. The nurse may provide coordination of communicable disease in schools including health department reporting, case management, and prevention services. The school nurse will provide staff training, coordinate the school Medical Response Team, oversee the AED program, and provide annual training for medication administration, emergency medication administration, and a wide variety of health and wellness activities as assigned. School Nurses may participate in IEP team meetings, the development of behavior management plans, and other student plans to improve student success. The school nurse will function within the Nurse team to provide a wide range of health promotion, disease prevention, and coordination of care for all students within their assigned school(s).Qualifications:Must have a valid Michigan license to practice as a Registered NurseBachelor's degree requiredMust have a current interim, standard, or professional school nurse certificate issued by the State Board of Education or be immediately eligible for one of the three categories of certificationMust have a minimum of 2 years of professional nursing experience in school nursing, pediatric nursing or a related fieldSample Job Responsibilities:Develop emergency care plans for students with chronic illnessDevelop medical care plans for students with chronic illnesses (asthma, allergies, seizures, etc.)Serve as liaison between home, school, and health care providersAssist students and families with access to environmental resources to improve attendance and well-beingConnect with students with high absenteeism to remove barriers to attendanceProvide coordination of communicable diseases in school, including health department reporting, case management, and preventionProvide classroom instruction re: health and wellness, prevention and health promotion strategiesMonitor administration of daily and emergency medication at schoolMonitor and ensure compliance with district medication policiesOversee the distribution, maintenance, and staff training for emergency medications such as Narcan, Epi-penProvide staff training for a wide variety of medical conditions and needsProvide training for Medical Emergency Response Teams in each schoolEnsure compliance with state-mandated immunization requirements including monitoring, referrals, follow-up, and hosting immunization clinicsFollow up with families whose children fail the state-mandated vision and hearing screenings at schoolFollow up with families whose children fail the dental screeningsOversight of the AED program, including monitoring of AED's and staff training regarding use and functionProvide hands-on skilled Nursing assessment and care for routine illness, accident, and injury at schoolAssist families with obtaining primary care for their children in the communityDirect oversight for medical assistants assigned to their schoolsParticipate in IEP's and student planning at assigned schoolsParticipate in the development of plans and other student plans to improve access to the curriculumMake district-wide referrals for various needs and services (FORT, behavioral support, counseling, etc.)Oversee the distribution of Weekend Survival kits at assigned schoolsProvide routine care, service, and support in school nurse-managed health clinics in schoolOther duties as assignedWork Environment & Physical RequirementsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.Must be able to move throughout the building and campus, including classrooms, hallways, and outdoor spaces.Frequent verbal communication is required to instruct students, lead meetings, and collaborate with staff and families.May be required to stand or walk for extended periods, including during supervisory duties.Occasional bending, reaching, or sitting on the floor to interact with students.Regular use of computers and instructional technology for planning, instruction, and communication.Must be able to lift or carry instructional materials and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.$50,285 - $95,000 a year Work Days per Week: 5 days Salary: Per appropriate placement on the LSEA master agreement salary schedule Bargaining Unit: LSEAAt Lansing School District, we champion diversity, equity, and inclusion, providing equal opportunities to all qualified applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or sexual orientation.
