Job Title Pre-Health Advising Specialist (Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences BS Program – College of Medicine) Location Tallahassee, FL Employment Type Regular | Full‑Time Job ID 62802 Department Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences BS Program – College of Medicine Responsibilities Serves as pre‑med/pre‑health advisor; assists students with their course schedule, career choice, and informs them of the resources available within the university. Provides academic guidance and counseling to prospective and current pre‑health professional undergraduate students regarding prerequisite courses and other qualifications for application to the professional school of their choice. Meets with students for individualized appointments and communicates via email and other student communication services. Maintains a log of advising notes in a computerized database at the College of Medicine and within the university advising system (Advisor Center and EAB). Builds relationships, monitors progress, provides intervention, follow‑up, and academic support for students as needed. Represents the pre‑health advising services at University‑wide orientation programs. Manages the letters of recommendation process for pre‑medical students applying to medical schools via the Pre‑Health Professions Advising Office. Coordinates meetings with students, processes letters, creates letter packets, and uploads packet information into VirtualEvals for AMCAS; emails faculty and students immediately upon receipt of letters and maintains excellent communication. Makes presentations to pre‑medical student organizations about the letter submission process. Updates the Pre‑Health Advising webpage with instructions regarding securing letters of recommendation. Supports Pre‑Health professional organizations staffed by the Pre‑Health Professions Advising Office. Advises post‑baccalaureate students, reviews personal statements and mock interviews, and designs an intervention plan for student application or reapplication to medical school. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience; or a combination of post‑high school education and experience equal to six years (post‑high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate). Preferred Qualifications Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to prioritize, organize, and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously. Ability to utilize problem‑solving skills. Helpful Information During the first 90 days of hire, the selected candidate should expect to participate in advisor training, shadow colleagues, learn about the IMS Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences Division, and advise.
