Job Summary Staff Nurse - 36hr Variable Night - BWH Trauma ICU. The Registered Nurse is a professional nurse registered in Massachusetts responsible and accountable for planning and providing patient care for assigned patients in accordance with Nursing Standards of Care. The RN demonstrates initiative, knowledge and clinical skills, fully responsible for assessment, plan, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. Essential Functions Organization of Patient Care Accountable for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating a plan of care for a specific patient assignment. Sets priorities when organizing care for patients with varying acuity. Maintains continuity through clear and concise verbal and written communication. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of growth and development of the adult and geriatric patient. Applies principles of growth and development to neonates in NICU and Obstetrics. Quality of Care Documents patient care clearly, completely, concisely, and in compliance with nursing documentation standards. Develops a comprehensive plan of care based on data from initial assessment, family input, team input, and prior records. Develops a comprehensive educational plan for the patient and family, utilizing appropriate resources and documentations. Develops a comprehensive discharge plan using appropriate resources and referrals, including community resources. Evaluates effectiveness of the plan of care, documents progress, revises plan as needed. Participates in unit-based and organizational quality management and improvement programs. Provides a safe environment for patients, staff, family and visitors. Administers medication safely according to policies and procedures. Performs nursing procedures safely and efficiently. Uses equipment safely and efficiently. Demonstrates awareness of potential/actual infection risks. Utilizes universal precautions. Coordination/Collaboration Interacts with patients, families, and colleagues professionally. Collaborates with other disciplines. Utilizes and evaluates unit-specific standards of care. Upholds ANA code of ethics and acts as a role model. Participates in determining and implementing unit goals and objectives. Serves on unit-based and organizational committees. Education Assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth, identifying learning needs. Shares knowledge and experience with colleagues. Participates in unit-based and organizational educational programs. Seeks and accepts guidance for additional learning needs. Research Utilizes nursing research findings in clinical practice. Contributes to nursing and/or medical research endeavors by supporting investigators. Budget Utilizes time and materials efficiently and economically. Provides suggestions for cost-effective health care. Assesses patient acuity accurately for staffing decisions. Demonstrates awareness of managing within budgetary constraints. Personnel Participates in orientation of new staff, students, and others as appropriate. Provides input in clinical evaluation of other staff. Assumes responsibility for the unit in absence of leadership. Adheres to hospital and nursing policies and aids in interpretation. Recommends policy changes through appropriate channels. Participates in cooperative effort and peer support for smooth unit operations. Qualifications Education Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required. Experience can be accepted in lieu of a degree. Licenses and Credentials Massachusetts Registered Nurse required. Experience Current 2 years nursing experience required. Current surgical trauma experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Basic analytic thinking to care for a group of patients. Observational skills and ability to set priorities. Functions under stress with good interpersonal and communication skills. Effective skills in applying hospital standards, teamwork, communication, respect, and time/priority management.
