Ultrasound Technologist I - Vascular Sonographer

Overview Summary: This position performs diagnostic ultrasound imaging including a variety of invasive and non-invasive procedures such as biopsies, routine OB/GYN, limited vascular, abdomen, small parts, intra-cavity imaging, and color Doppler. The Ultrasound Technologist must have strong critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving abilities while assuming responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients in their care. Strong communication skills are necessary to interact with and instruct patients under physical or emotional stress; able to comprehend and follow physicians’ orders and imaging protocols. The technologist will work productively within a complex environment of inpatient, emergency department, and outpatient settings, multitasking with changing priorities. Responsibilities and Duties: Produces quality images by selecting appropriate technical factors, equipment, and transducer settings. Verifies patient orders, reviews appropriateness for exam, obtains patient history, explains procedures, and addresses patient concerns to ensure comfort and confidence. Determines if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes, using independent judgment during the sonographic exam to differentiate normal from pathologic findings. Operates sonographic equipment independently; communicates findings of diagnostic examinations; manages daily department operations, patient scheduling, equipment maintenance, and QA. Maintains a clean work environment and adequate supplies. Performs appropriate sterilization techniques and documents logs, charts, forms, and records in paper and electronic formats. Complies with The Joint Commission, federal, state, and local regulatory standards and protocols. Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information with medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician. Provides ultrasound guidance for biopsies/aspirations; prepares equipment and supplies, observes sterile techniques, and assists the physician as needed. Assumes responsibility for patient safety and comfort; delivers quality patient care with universal precautions and confidentiality; demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times. Maintains department operations, participates in meetings, and collaborates with other personnel to achieve department and hospital goals. Performs other duties as assigned including on-call duties between departments. Flexibility to work long shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays; may be required to alternate shifts. On-Call and Shift Information: Provides department-specific on-call duties as assigned; may involve days, evenings, and weekends within the coverage area. Qualifications and Certifications Credential: BLS: Basic Life Support Equivalent Experience: Within 3 months of hire or transfer Qualification Source: AHA Essential: true Credential: ARDMS AB: Abdominal Ultrasound Tech Equivalent Experience: Ultrasound technologists performing general ultrasound imaging (abdomen, small parts, OB/GYN) must obtain and maintain active ARDMS certifications in Abdomen or OB/GYN within one year of hire (C). Physical/mental requirements and working conditions as described, including exposure to stressful situations, PPE use, ability to move about facility, and light physical demands. Physical Demand Level: Light; occasional lifting 11-20 lbs, frequent movement of 10 lbs, and ability to walk/stand for long periods.
