About the Department The USC Department of Public Safety (DPS) is one of the largest campus public safety departments in the United States and employs over 300 full‑time personnel. DPS’s primary mission is to provide safe and secure environments on the USC campuses and in the areas surrounding the campuses. The department seeks individuals who have the knowledge, experience, and sense of commitment to make the USC community safer. Job Summary In this important role, you will support the general safety of the university community by performing assigned patrol duties. You will secure the interior and exterior openings of facilities, monitor electronic door access and closed‑circuit television systems, assist with investigations, and perform perimeter and parking lot security functions. This is an unarmed position working under direct supervision of a Community Service Officer II or a Sergeant. Job Responsibilities Patrol an assigned area, performing prescribed security checks of buildings, offices, and grounds to prevent loss of university assets. Open and/or secure buildings and rooms according to procedures or as directed; operate and/or monitor electronic door access and CCTV systems. Dispatch or coordinate responses to situations based on observations made on CCTV and electronic door access; assist with access at locations with malfunctioning systems. Maintain logs and records of duty times, occurrences, actions taken, and observations; prepare and submit reports as required. Implement department procedures governing apprehensions, interrogations, and disposition of cases. Assist with parking control and vehicle/pedestrian security; direct traffic and give directions. Assist in maintaining perimeter and crowd control in areas of crime, emergencies, and special activities. Escort university and hospital employees, students, and/or patients between facilities and their vehicles. Assist in crime prevention and public information programs. Implement and enforce OSHA, CAL‑OSHA, and university policies related to safety, health, and fire prevention. Serve as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and mandatory reporter under the Clery Act; receive and report crimes or criminal incidents from victims or third parties, and notify the Department of Public Safety and the Clery Compliance Coordinator of any ongoing threats. Selection Process Evaluation: Your application will be evaluated based on relevant experience and education. In‑Depth Screening: After interview, successful candidates will undergo background, psychological, and medical evaluations. Work Schedule Your regularly assigned work schedule/shift hours is a 4/10 alternative schedule; 10 hours per day, 40 hours per week. Work schedules and hours may change at any time to accommodate business needs. The initial work schedule will be determined by your immediate supervisor. Please note: Shifts include holidays, weekends, and overtime. Availability to work special events and emergencies is required. Must possess a valid Driver’s License for 2 years and a valid State of California Department of Consumer Affairs Guard Card. Field of Expertise: Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License and a valid State of California Department of Consumer Affairs Guard Card. Hourly Range The hourly rate for this position is $21.00.
