Pathologist Asst - Lead

Position Summary The Pathologist’s Assistant will contribute to the overall efficiency of the Pathology Department and laboratory service in a cost-effective manner by performing a variety of tasks, primarily gross examination of surgical pathology specimens and the supervision of the autopsy service. The assistant has a lead role in the grossing areas of the department, describing and examining surgical specimens and preparing them for histological processing. The role includes assisting residents and technical staff with gross dissections, teaching residents and staff in grossing techniques and procedures, and supporting supervisory staff to complete work in the grossing area efficiently. The Pathologist’s Assistant manages the day-to-day operations of the morgue based on patient care needs and regulatory and quality standards, exercising independent judgment and responsibility for technical and administrative decisions for the morgue in collaboration with laboratory directors. Other critical aspects include project management, budget development and maintenance, management of supplies and resources, and administrative oversight of staffing issues including hiring, competency assessment, development, and corrective actions. The assistant assists in autopsy prosection, participates in seminars, and provides instruction to residents, medical students, and departmental staff concerning technique and protocol in autopsy and surgical pathology. Responsibilities Gross examination of surgical pathology specimens and preparation for histological processing. Assist in surgical gross dissections and frozen section cutting. Teach residents and staff in grossing techniques and procedures. Oversee day-to-day morgue operations, including autopsy prosection. Lead project management, budget maintenance, and resource management. Provide administrative oversight of staffing, including hiring and competency assessment. Qualifications Prior experience in a hospital or health–care laboratory performing intraoperative frozen sections, gross dissection, analysis, and dictation of surgical pathology specimens and autopsies. Post‑baccalaureate training in anatomic and clinical pathology preferred. New York State licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist (or Technician), Certified Histological Technician, or Pathologist Assistant. Certification by the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA) highly desirable. Graduation from a Baccalaureate Pathologists’ Assistant program or successful completion of a Master’s program from an approved school. Bachelor’s degree in sciences with a background in physiology and anatomy and three to five years of experience in pathology. Experience Three to five years of experience in pathology, including surgical gross pathology, frozen section cutting, and autopsy.
