Firefighter/EMT Position

The City of Valdez Fire Department is seeking a motivated, driven, and team-oriented person to serve in the role of Firefighter/EMT. This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefited position that works a Kelly Shift schedule. Under close supervision of the Fire Company Officer, the Firefighter/EMT performs firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical duties as required to control emergency incidents. Interested individuals must have the following minimum qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • IFSAC/Pro Board Hazmat Operations Certification
  • IFSAC/Pro Board Firefighter 1 Certification
  • State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician 1
  • Valid drivers license with the ability to obtain an Alaska Driver's License within 90 days
  • Ability to pass a nationwide background check
  • Ability to pass an NFPA 1582 compliant physical exam after conditional offer of employment
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive drug panel screening after conditional offer of employment

Preferred Qualifications IFSAC/Pro Board Firefighter 2 Certified State of Alaska EMT 3/EMT-A Certified

Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures. May be exposed to hazardous materials, dangerous machinery and potential physical harm when responding to fire and rescue emergencies. Must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class.) PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Responds to emergencies and performs fire suppression, rescue, hazmat, and emergency medical duties as required.
  • Operates and inspects emergency, fire, rescue, medical and life saving tools and equipment.
  • Maintains Fire Department facilities, equipment, and supplies; cleans, repairs, and returns equipment to service after use.
  • Assists in the maintenance of required departmental and emergency response records.
  • Performs preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists with emergency medical and fire training for volunteer emergency responders.
  • Periodically coordinate single resource activities on the emergency scene and during training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS : Knowledge of:

  • Fire Department policies and procedures.
  • Firefighting and emergency services techniques and procedures, and related safety issues.
  • Basic knowledge of local, state, and national industrial standards and practices.

Skill in:

  • The safe operation of fire and emergency vehicles and equipment.
  • Performing firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical duties.
  • Performing maintenance and repair of firefighting vehicles, facilities, and equipment.
  • Leading and directing small groups during emergency operations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT : Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures. May be exposed to hazardous materials, dangerous machinery and potential physical harm when responding to fire and rescue emergencies. Must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma/GED IFSAC Firefighter 1 Certification State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician 1 Certification. Successfully pass an NFPA entry level medical exam PREFERRED: IFSAC Firefighter II State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician II Certification. One (1) year of municipal firefighting experience SPECIAL EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS UTILIZED: Emergency response vehicles, specialized fire department and personal protective equipment, rescue equipment and emergency medical tools and gear.

HEALTH INSURANCE

  • Currently monthly employee paid premium is approximately $132.00 per month for comprehensive family medical, RX, dental, vision, & hearing.
  • Basic life insurance policy provided.
  • Effective 1st day of month following 30 days of employment.

Medical

  • Low deductible: $100 per person not to exceed $300 per family.
  • $488 maximum out of pocket expense after deductible has been met.

Prescriptions

  • Generic Co-Pay $5.
  • Non-Generic Co-Pay $10.
  • Up to a 90-day supply from either mail order or brick/mortar pharmacy.
  • Extensive formulary.

Dental

  • Deductible: $25 per person not to exceed $75 per family.
  • Maximum annual benefit of $2500 per person.
  • Cleaning & exams pay at 100% with no deductible.
  • Orthodontics for dependents up to age 19.
  • Implants are covered not to exceed annual benefit maximums.

Vision

  • No deductible.
  • One exam per family member per year.
  • Lenses each year covered at 90%.
  • A year supply of contacts annually covered at 50%.
  • Frames every other year covered at 90% not to exceed $200.
  • Lasik coverage - $2000 lifetime benefit.

Hearing

  • No Deductible.
  • Exam is covered at 90%.
  • Device is covered at 50%.

Optional life insurance

  • Based on employee age and amount of coverage
  • Spouse coverage available
  • Coverage for children of $10,000 at $.56 per pay period for all children on plan.

RETIREMENT PLANS State of Alaska Public Employee Retirement System

  • 8% pre-tax contribution to PERS Tier IV Defined Contribution Plan.
  • 5% city match.
  • 5-year vesting schedule.

Optional deferred compensation plan & city matching 401(a)

  • Pre-tax contribution into a 457 plan, not to exceed federal limitations (2025 is $23,500) - no waiting period to enroll.
  • City will match not to exceed 6.2% for regular employees and 9.3% for executive staff into a 401(a) after 90 days of employment.

PAID TIME OFF

  • New employees accrue 24 days per year for first 2 years of service.
  • Hourly employees can accrue compensatory time in lieu of overtime at the rate of 1.5 hours per hour worked.
