Mobile Medical Laboratory Technician & Phlebotomist Moderate-Complexity Testing | Washington State Location: Mobile position throughout Washington State Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Friday, with rotating weekend on-call coverage Travel: Daily travel to nursing homes, clinics, and community facilities Reports To: Program Manager and Laboratory Director Position Summary We are seeking a skilled, dependable, and patient-focused Mobile Medical Laboratory Technician and Phlebotomist to join our growing mobile diagnostic laboratory team. Important applicant requirement: Candidates must possess an active Washington State MA-P credential and meet the education and training requirements to perform moderate-complexity laboratory testing. Candidates with only phlebotomy experience or only laboratory-testing experience will not meet the requirements of this combined position. This is a combined position requiring experience in both phlebotomy and laboratory testing . The successful candidate will collect patient specimens, perform moderate-complexity and point-of-care testing, safely operate the mobile laboratory vehicle, and manage daily laboratory operations in compliance with CLIA, Washington State Department of Health, OSHA, and HIPAA requirements. This is not a phlebotomy-only position. Applicants must be qualified and comfortable performing both specimen collection and laboratory testing in a mobile environment. Key Responsibilities Phlebotomy and Specimen Collection Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients in nursing homes, clinics, and community settings. Collect urine, swab, and other approved specimens according to laboratory procedures. Verify patient identity and ensure specimens are accurately labeled and documented. Prepare, process, store, and package specimens for in-house testing or transport to reference laboratories. Follow infection-control procedures, standard precautions, and biohazard-waste protocols. Provide professional, compassionate care to older adults and medically complex patients. Moderate-Complexity and Point-of-Care Testing Perform laboratory testing in areas that may include: Chemistry: Piccolo Xpress and Abbott i-STAT Hematology: HemoScreen Diabetes Management: Afinion 2 and DCA Vantage Urinalysis: Clinitek Status+ Molecular Testing: GeneXpert Xpress Additional responsibilities include: Perform testing accurately and within established turnaround times. Complete and document quality control, calibration, and instrument maintenance. Recognize and troubleshoot pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical errors. Review test results for accuracy and communicate concerns according to laboratory procedures. Document and securely transmit results in compliance with HIPAA and internal policies. Participate in proficiency testing, competency assessments, and continuing education as required. Follow all laboratory standard operating procedures and manufacturer instructions. Mobile Laboratory and Vehicle Operations Safely operate the mobile laboratory vehicle to and from assigned nursing homes, clinics, and community facilities. Complete daily vehicle safety inspections and required driving logs. Maintain a clean, organized, properly stocked, and professional mobile laboratory environment. Secure laboratory instruments, specimens, supplies, and protected health information during transportation. Monitor inventory and ensure adequate levels of reagents, testing supplies, personal protective equipment, and phlebotomy materials. Report vehicle, equipment, safety, or testing concerns promptly to the Program Manager or Laboratory Director. Compliance and Documentation Follow CLIA, Washington State Department of Health, OSHA, HIPAA, and laboratory safety requirements. Maintain accurate patient, testing, quality-control, maintenance, inventory, vehicle, and incident records. Follow established procedures for biohazard handling, exposure control, and infection prevention. Maintain patient confidentiality and protect all patient health information. Communicate effectively with laboratory leadership, clinical staff, facility staff, providers, and patients. Required Qualifications Current Washington State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist credential (MA-P) . Education and training that meet applicable CLIA personnel qualifications for moderate-complexity testing. Associate or bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or another qualifying laboratory science. Demonstrated competency in phlebotomy, specimen processing, and laboratory testing. Valid Washington State driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Ability and willingness to travel throughout assigned areas of Washington State. Knowledge of laboratory quality control, instrument maintenance, infection prevention, and specimen-handling procedures. Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in a mobile environment. Strong attention to detail, organization, communication, and patient-service skills. Dependable attendance and the ability to manage a changing daily schedule. Preferred Qualifications MLT certification through ASCP, AMT, or an equivalent nationally recognized organization. National phlebotomy certification through ASCP, AMT, NHA, or another recognized organization. At least one year of experience performing moderate-complexity laboratory testing. Experience working in a mobile laboratory, physician-office laboratory, urgent care, nursing home, or long-term care environment. Experience with Piccolo Xpress, Abbott i-STAT, HemoScreen, Afinion 2, DCA Vantage, FastPack IP, GeneXpert Xpress, or Clinitek Status+. Experience working with older adults and medically complex patient populations. Skills and Competencies Strong venipuncture and specimen-collection skills. Ability to perform laboratory testing accurately and efficiently. Understanding of quality-control and regulatory documentation requirements. Ability to troubleshoot instruments and identify testing errors. Professional and compassionate communication with patients and facility staff. Reliability, flexibility, and self-sufficiency. Ability to prioritize assignments and manage multiple testing locations. Commitment to patient safety, accuracy, and confidentiality. Physical Requirements Ability to drive for extended periods and travel between multiple facilities during the workday. Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 40 pounds of equipment and supplies. Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform specimen collection for extended periods. Ability to work safely in a confined mobile laboratory environment. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and safely handle biological specimens.
