Maintenance Technician Apprentice - 1st Shift

Job Description:
Incumbent will work closely with a seasoned Mechanic on developing his/her mechanical skills while adhering to an established on the job training program. In addition to the on-the-job training portion, the incumbent will simultaneously attend technical school training at Waubonsee Community College. Incumbent will be responsible for attaining his/her associate's degree in Automation Technology within the three year apprenticeship guidelines.


Under the guidance and supervision of senior mechanics and Team Leads, the incumbent is responsible for learning how to upkeep, maintain, repair, troubleshoot, modify and continuously look for ways to improve production machinery and processes. While developing these new skills the incumbent will also be responsible for following all Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO) and factory specific safety protocols.


Over the course of the three-year program the incumbent will develop skills in machine repair, learning machine components, machining, welding, pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical, program logic and troubleshooting. Incumbent will also be trained across multiple work centers in the factory including but not limited to HIS, HB/manual mixing, mints, cold scoring/automated mixing, stick wrapping, Skittles processing and wrapping departments.


The incumbent will be closely monitored by his/her trainer and pass competency checks throughout his/her rotation to ensure satisfactory progress is being made. Upon completion of the apprenticeship program the incumbent will be responsible for working in multiple work centers in both a mechanical and electrical capacity.


The incumbent must possess effective communication skills, have the ability to work in a team environment and help drive continuous improvement initiatives at Yorkville factory. This is all to be performed while adhering to and encouraging the Mars Five Principles.

Education/Training

• Minimum: High School Diploma or GED equivalent with a recommendation from the incumbent's team leader.

Preferred:

• High School diploma or GED equivalent with two years' mechanical experience in a manufacturing environment.

Upon Completion of three Year Apprenticeship Program: The incumbent will have completed his/her associate's degree in Automation Technology from Waubonsee Community College. The incumbent must have successfully completed all program requirements and competency checks for each of the designated work centers.

Related Experience/Requirements:

Minimum:

• Must have a minimum of one year with the company.
• Must be an associate in good standing with no job performance or behavioral issues.
• Once accepted into the program, associate must be continuously enrolled in the Automation Technology program at Waubonsee Community College for the duration of the 3 year program unless the incumbent graduates early.
  
  

Preferred:

• Three years of mechanical experience in a related manufacturing environment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Minimum: Math, communications, computer, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred: Forklift certification.

Physical Requirements:

• Frequent lifting/carrying (10-50 lbs.)
• Frequent pushing/pulling (50-200 lbs.)
• Frequent leaning, bending and stooping
• Frequent gripping and handling
• Frequent walking and climbing of stairs
• Ability to stand and or work on feet for extended periods of time (Minimum eight hours in one shift)
• Ability to work at elevated heights using a ladder, platform or scissor lift
• Ability to work in tight and confined spaces

What will be your key responsibilities? (each item should account for 10% or more)

• Incumbent's primary job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Complete his/her associate's degree in Automation Technology at Waubonsee Community College within a three-year timeframe.
• During the on-the-job training portion of the apprenticeship learn how to upkeep, maintain, repair, troubleshoot, modify and look for ways to continuously improve production machinery and processes throughout the factory.
• Perform and complete required Preventative Maintenance (PM'S), Work Orders (WO'S), Cleaning Inspection & Lubrication tasks (CIL'S).
• Understand and adhere to all Lock-Out Tag-out (LOTO) procedures, Confined Space, and all other plant safety and GMP requirements related to supporting safe work practices at the Yorkville factory.
• Use hand held devices to create required work notifications, monitor and close out work orders in SAP.
• Effectively communicate with peers, team leaders, trainers and all levels of management on a consistent basis.
• Have the ability to work a flexible schedule and overtime as needed to support production requirements.
• Support continuous improvement activities at the Yorkville factory and actively participate on pillar/lean teams.

DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY, RECOMMENDATIONS AND IMPACT

• Identify, recommend, and implement improvement opportunities after discussing with their team lead.
• Ability to stop the process after a non-conformance or maintenance issue has been identified. Proper escalation protocol must be followed.

The base pay range for this position at commencement of employment is between the range listed below, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position will include variable pay, medical and dental benefits, participation in 401k plan, and paid time off benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an applicant receives an offer of employment.
